Auto Column????????

Can anyone tell me how to identify a column for an auto trans versus a manual trans? My truck is auto but was originally (from factory) manual. However, the column has been changed so now I am not sure what I have. The shifter has been located to the floor and I am trying to get it back up on the column so my wife has room for her feet when she is sitting next to me on the bench. Gotta love bench seats!
