Non Barn Find '66 Chevy Truck

-
Added 15 pictures 1/23/2013

Greetings to the '60-'66 board members.

I usually hang out over on the '67-'72 board but I thought you guys & gals might like to see what I looked at yesterday. It isn't a barn find but as you can see it is a machine shed find. The guy that owns it (Eddie) is 94 years old and just moved to a nursing home. Eddie bought the truck new and finally quit driving it about 4 or 5 years ago. It is in amazing shape for an Iowa farm truck. It has the high tourque 283 V-8 and a three speed column shift. I took a lot of pictures but lost most of them because I laid my hand held cordless trouble light next to the camera on the car seat. The trouble light has a strong magnet on the side of it and the magnet scrambled the pictures on the card. These are all I was able to save. I took a small tarp and my trouble light so I could check it out underneath and the body mounts and floorboards look really good. I don't know a lot about the '66 trucks but the seat cover looks original and is in good shape. The wood bed is nice except for one of the short boards in the front passengers side corner.(one of the pic I lost) It isn't rotted but it is warped. Tailgate is really nice.(another pic lost) As you can see, the truck needs a good cleaning, but I think it would look pretty good after a bath.

What are your thoughts on a fair price on this? I don't want to steal it but I don't want to over pay for it either.. I do know that you don't run on to many un-molested original trucks around here, but like I said I don't know a lot about the '60-'66's.

Does anyone know what the Z62AA is on the SPID?

Thanks.

The pile of stuff on the dash is bird nests. Seems Eddie saved them when he found them..

Wow! Leon just what you need another project
As far as a fair price,$2500.00 tops but if it starts and moves add dollars. If you buy it and clean it up and a few mods you could turn it for $5-6 grand to the right person.

Very cool find. Too bad on the lost pics as we could use a few more overall shots.
That's the way we all want to find one.
Why was it parked, and for how long? milage?
I hear a lot of guys say "not much rust for around here", but if the cost of rust repair costs more than having a dry truck shipped from out west, then that thinking is flawed.

Thanks Ray. I would probably just clean it up and turn it. I would like to make a few bucks for the time I spend cleaning it up though. Like you said I don't need another project...

It was parked because Eddie had to quit driving. As for how long see post #1. I didn't look at the mileage because mileage doesn't mean squat on these trucks. You can't tell anything by it because you can't tell if it has turned over or not. You can only tell by the small telltale signs of wear and condition.

You can see the small spot of rust on the bottom of the front fender and pass side cab corner. Rockers have no rust (inner or outer) and the tops of the fenders/inner panels (under the hood) have about a half dollar sized spot on each side right in the front. Any rust repair that it needs I can do myself.

Thanks.

Z 62 is the custom comfort option. Better seat, dual sun visors extra insulation. All original trucks like this one is where you learn about what is correct and incorrect. Also, it has a rare one year only ( for '66 ) Dark Aqua paint ( 536 ).

Re: Non Barn Find '66 Chevy Truck

Z62 was the Custom Group option package. Since Z62 is on the tag, that means they also bought the Z61 Custom Group package.

v37 is the chrome front and rear bumpers which also included matching chrome hubcaps.

custom cab trucks were normally stamped on the kick panel i.d. plate with the z61 trim code, but when they also included the custom comfort package the z61 was supeceded with the z62 trim code.

Re: Non Barn Find '66 Chevy Truck

Just noticed the cardboard gas tank cover is intact. It's kinda silly, but this one item alone is a good indicator of an unmolested and well cared for truck, as nearly all have disintegrated by now. This truck just could be a diamond in the rough. Not liking the little bit of rust in the fender tops though ..look out for more!

I didn't notice that either oem. I was going to rely on my pictures for a lot of info but that didn't work. I will be going back up there in the next few days so I will look at stuff closer and take more pictures. Thanks.
