california black and yellow plates

I have a matching pair of California black and yellow plates that came on a 1971 C20 I recently bought. These have been in Illinois in the truck since approx 1995 when the gentelman moved here and licensed it with Illinois tags. These are very solid with a small amount of rust on the back side. The lic frame bolts are rusted and I didn't want to risk damage by removing them , but the back of the plates are pictured as well. There is a little wave to them but they could be flattened. Asking $100 shipped. Thanks

Great price if they are cleared!

Re: california black and yellow plates

What has to be done for them to be clear? In Illinois they purge stuff that hasn't been registered in only a few years. We can also run year of manufacture plates on an antique vehicle as long as there is valid registration in the vehicle.

In California, once registered they are in the system until the registered owner file papers with California DMV.

All one needs to do is call the DMV here and check.

Re: california black and yellow plates

All it takes is a call to the DMV to find out. Someone who is looking for these plates will do just that. If they have been unregistered since 94 there is a good chance they are cleared and out of the system. Unless someone calls to confirm, it's just speculation.

Re: california black and yellow plates

Hey Carbajal. Yes you can use them but the DMV is going to want an original 1969 tag on the plate which ive heard you can get on ebay. From there a form has to be filled and later Sacramento sends you a set of plates but i 've heard that they are re-issuing these plates too?!?!? either way its do-able and a fair price for some nice plates.

Re: california black and yellow plates

I live in the town where those came from (see the license frames). When I went looking at trucks to buy in 1972 I went to McCollough Chevrolet. I told the salesman that I was looking for a short bed step side 4 x 4 and he just blew me off. I was just a kid and he didn't take me seriously. He said that Chevy didn't make a 4 x 4 stepside. He said that he would give me $1.00 for every one I could show him.

Well, obviously he didn't make the sale and my '72 step side 4 x 4 is sitting in my garage! If he is reading this out there, he owes em $1.00!

Yes, and mo is on the right track. You will need a 1969 sticker which is available on eBay. The DMV will not issue you new plates...you will use the original plates. California started a program where they will issue older "retro" style plates for a fee, but they will look nothing like the originals and easy to spot as such.

Re: california black and yellow plates

I will try and call the DMV tomorrow and find out the status. Been busy at work so I have not had a chance.

Re: california black and yellow plates

DMV shows no record on file for those plates when ran through the system. They are probably clear.
