Long distance buys
A short intro; Ive been on the 67-72 area for a bit but sold my 70, bought a blazer and was rear ended, totaling it after just a month of ownership. Now Im on the hunt for a decent mid-late 90s x-cab. So far what Ive found close to home is...well... junk! Ive found nice trucks for decent money as close as 2 hours away up to 5 or better. Got me thinking is it crazy to want something bad enough to spend a half day driving to get it? I like stories. How far have you gone to get your truck?

Re: Long distance buys
I've driven 4-6 hours multiple times to look at trucks.
(The only time it bugs me is when an owner flat out lies... had a 5 hour drive for that once.) My daily 98 was about 3 hours away from me. It's getting harder & harder to find 88-98s that arent junk. |

Re: Long distance buys
Wow! You guys are nuts!
As luck would have it, which usualy isnt on my side, a 93 popped up on c.l. just about 15 minutes from my place. Ill get pics posted up tomorrow on one of the existing threads. Pretty stoked. I had 4 trucks lined up in the Chicago area to look at today and saved myself about 6 hours of driving there, around and back.

Re: Long distance buys
I found my '89 SCSB Silverado about 30 seconds down the road. My neighbor and good friend took it in trade for a car he was selling and sold it to me. It needed a motor but was in good shape otherwise. $500 and a 350 out of a '92 G20 van and I was good to go.

Re: Long distance buys
Post a message on this board looking for someone close that can look at it for you. Get some eyes on it, and not the seller's eyes. I have looked at a truck for someone close to me, and someone in California looked at a truck for me (and saved me a ton of $$ and frustration).

Re: Long distance buys
For me a lot of the fun in buying a truck, car, or motorcycle is the hunt and the going to get it.

However, I hate being lied to. Last year I was on the hunt for a short box frame. I found one about 7hrs away. The body was pretty rusty but the frame looked clean. After explaining to the owner that all I was after was the frame, he said it was straight and rust free. He even provided pics, it looked good. The frame horns were pulled outwards!!! The ride home really sucked. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Long distance buys
A pal of mine got drunk at home one evening...bought a 1999 Ford 1 ton off ebay..truck was in New York!!
After a bit of sobering-up regrets...he bought himself and wife plane tickets..flew to NY and actually bought the truck. Got lucky..was a good truck. I've met people halfway to look at a vehicle...but myself..I won't buy sight unseen. |
