POR15 vs Rustoleum??

I'm starting to take my 71 apart now for a driver restoration. My frame is solid, but has a lot of surface rust and minor scale. A wire wheel on a 4" grinder cleans it up pretty good. I really don't have the time or extra funds to strip the frame 100% and have it sand blasted, again it's just going to be a driver.
I would like to preserve what is there the best i can though, so my question is, what's the best option? My plan would be to wire wheel all the open areas and use a small hand held blaster for the tight areas.

I've read mixxed reviews on POR15, some love it, some hate it. What are your thoughts, does it hold up and stop the rust? I would also add a top coat to it to prevent the UV fading.

I've had good luck with Rustoleum paints in the past as well. Cleaning the metal with a wire wheel, then using the rusty metal primer and add a top coat.

I'll be doing the same thing to the underside of the bed as well.

I haven't used por15, but definitely have used Rustoleum, and it works very well. That rusty metal primer is awesome. Can't imagine something working any better

If you REALLY want to save your metal Then use the product that I've used and swear by as well as many, many more.

Easier to use than por and it will NOT peel off like por and you can Spray it, Sand it and paint over it.

The problem most folks have with POR-15 and similar products is that the final coat is part of a system that requires the purchase of a couple other products to insure adhesion.

Por15 is intensely awesome, but yes, you should get the stuff to stick to it, i use it on inner cab and underfloor

I've been using POR-15 a lot on my rebuild. It's tough as nails and the only downside I've seen is you have to be careful not to get it on yourself when you are applying it. For everywhere I've used it, I've brushed it on with a sponge brush. The top coat (where I've put it on) brushes on just fine as well (see pic).

I started my rebuild almost ten years ago and have just started getting going on it again. Ten years ago, I painted a steel fence post driver with it, and it gets left out in the weather almost all the time, and it has held up really well.

It's a little spendy, but I think it's a good product.

This is Rustoleum primer & topcoat, 1st pic is topcoat, degrease, scrub with TSP or Dawn & water, sand bare metal, get a cheap spray gun & thin accordingly ****spray light thin coats it will run with heavy coats****sand sealer with 220 grit sandpaper, wipe with a tack cloth, spray light thin coats top coat till covered careful of finish till it cures

KBS is cheaper and works better. Did my frame with it and it still looks awesome! Por15 turns purple too... Don't let the sun hit it!

I've always been raised off of rustoleum. Do it right and it will last for a good while.

I have had good luck with Rustoleum as well. I have striped (with wire brush) a couple farm tractors and repainted them and they have held up great and I put them through heck, far more abuse then any of us would put our trucks through.

On my interior cab floor the POR 15 was some of the most amazing stuff I have ever used and extremely happy with it. However, it's very expensive and just depends on your budget and type of restoration you are wanting to do. ANY rust prevention is better than just painting it.

POR 15 works great. Follow the directions and it will never come off.

I've used both. POR15 is just really expensive. I've started using Chassis Saver satin http://magnetpaints.com/underbody.asp and I like it way better and its a good bit cheaper.
I'm about to repaint my car trailer with Rustoleum. That should be a test for how it will hold up to weather.

I've been using Chassis Saver Antique-Satin Black and top coating it with a spray can of chassis black from Eastwoods on my '68. I only have half of the frame done but here is what she looks like so far.

There's no comparison between Rustoleum and POR-15/Rust Bullet type products. In my opinion this is the best stuff out there. Check out their full line of products. They cover restoration
