6 cyl Alternator Swap Questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

So I researched until my eyes bled using the forum search function. I know I probably could research Google but frankly I'm tired so I'll just ask.

I found that my 250 alternator has 12 and 6 o'clock mounting points and the connector is at 3 o'clock. I also need a V belt pulley. I am going to be upgrading the truck with modern amenities like headlight relays, power windows, stereo...so on. I figure 100amps is mininmum for what I need. I found an alternator on Summit Racing..

The price seems right but I think I might be buying a Chinese product again. Anyone have experience with Tuff Stuff? Anyone have a better option within my parameters?

The best question is how much stereo are you going to do.....AMPS subs, high powered deck??? I would really suggest a 140amp and summit has the PowerMaster 47294 which is for your truck. Its a bit higher price, but with all the added amp draw you are adding I would want to be safe.

The stereo will be humble because it will all be hidden (more on that later

) It may have two mild amps or an amp and a powered sub. Knowing what I know about charging systems I shouldn't need more than 100amps. The truck is a fair weather, non-A/C truck. 120amps would be overkill for my system. Not to mention a High Zoot alternator has no place in this truck in its current condition. I would prefer a stock looking case.

Budget matters too. I am moving the battery behind the LR tire and unwrapping and modifying the front harness to delete the external regulator and include a new headlight harness. Everyone of my projects starts to snowball after a while. I need to pump the brakes and show some restraint. If I can upgrade the charging system now I can upgrade to a larger alternator later if need be.
