Installed a 2400 stall....what a difference!

I was having issues with my engine being kind of "doggy" since it has such a high rpm range and a stock converter in the th400 trans. So I took the stock 1300 rpm stall from my 400 trans and installed a b&m holeshot 2400 rpm stall. Wow, what a difference. The best way I can describe it would be....with the 1300 it was like taking off from a stop in 2nd or 3rd gear, but now it will set you back in the seat right off the bat. I highly recommend it if you havent done so, really lets the engine get to the rpm band quickly. Now I need to get rid of those crappy 3.07 stock gears in the rear end and stuff in some 3.73s! That'll get her movin! Chevy rocks!!

I dont see why it would work. It isnt really anything to do with if it is 4 wheel drive or not, it simply allows the engine to rev to whatever stall rpm you have very quickly.

That is good news. Just wait until the 3:73 is in and then you will be settin in your seat. Just remember to keep an eye on the temp gauge. Do you have an external trans cooler? Higher stall speeds will generate more heat. Keep it cool and have fun.

I just installed a new radiator with built in trans cooler (oem replacement) but I have pondered an actual trans cooler mounted in front of the radiator. Probably not a bad idea.

My bet is that your issue was not your high RPM capability, but more possibly the cam that you installed in your 355. The idle requirement to keep the engine at an idle in "DRIVE" was actually putting your carb at the transition point from idle to WOT. The doggy description is due to the tranny trying to pick up and the engine trying to come back into the operating range instead of being lugged down at the stop. The odds are, that now that you have a stall convertor, the idle can be adjusted back down closer to what it should be for the carburetor.

I would install the external cooler and have it in line after the radiator mounted cooler to make it more efficient. Tranny---radiator tranny cooler--external cooler---tranny


Keep in mind the slippage in the new convertor is going to add some heat to your tranny fluid, so more cooling is good.

A tight converter and high gears are just holding your engine back....it's like trying to run with you hand over your mouth.
