My Engine Quit
I took big orange out yesterday evening to take my wife to dinner and was returning home when the engine made a rattling noise and quit. I was only doin about 40 mph when it quit no warning signs before. I drifted it into a gas station and tried to start it. It cranks fine but tries to start then rattles some and blows white smoke back up through the carb. No backfiring. I'm leaning toward a broken cam or crank. The 307 has 113 original miles on it. Anyone have any suggestions? I haven't had time yet to do any compression tests or anything yet. Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: My Engine Quit
Timing chain would be my first guess also. Hope that is all that happened.

Re: My Engine Quit
Easy thing to check is to remove distributor cap first to see if rotor rotates with engine cranking. If it's timing chain at least you won't have to dismantle the whole engine.
Only thing that concerns me is the white smoke. If it's an automatic it could be transmission fluid being sucked into the intake or it could be coolant being sucked into the cylinders.

Re: My Engine Quit
Sounds like a timing chain.
Clarify - the 307 only has 113 miles on it?

Re: My Engine Quit
I'm confused about the white smoke through the carb part. What would cause the white smoke?

Re: My Engine Quit
me too about the white smoke. The engine has 113K on it instead of 113miles. Im going to take off the distributor cap and see if the rotar turns while cranking it. The timing chain seems more logical for the symptoms.

Re: My Engine Quit
I would check the timing chain. But then I always pick low hanging fruit first.

Re: My Engine Quit
Timing chain is the first thing that comes to mind.

Re: My Engine Quit
White smoke makes me think its not firing right and would indicate timing chain. If it was the crank you would think it wouldn't even crank over if it was seized up.

Re: My Engine Quit
The distributor is turning while the engine is cranking. Now im thinking the timing chain has jumped timing. Will try to verify that when the weather warms up.

Re: My Engine Quit
You can just wiggle the crank back and forth and you will "feel" if the chain is loose. Pop the right side valve cover off and make sure the valves on #1 are both closed when at TDC. is another way. Once had the trans modulator go bad and sucked a bunch of trans fluid in the carb and this happened. Do you have an automatic?

Re: My Engine Quit
no it's 3 on the tree. The white smoke was when the engine was warm. Today its spewing gas up through the carb. I will pull the covers and check the chain and the rockers. Stay tuned!

Re: My Engine Quit
Saying thats its spittin fuel out makes me think its jumped time because now you've got an intake valve open when it goes to dump fuel in then goes to compress that intake valve is still open so it blasts it back up and out. My opinion.

Re: My Engine Quit
i also would start with checking the timing chain. pull the cap, put it on t.d.c. and see where the rotor is pointing....it can back fire out of the carb, just depends if it fires when intake valve is open or exhaust valve is open..

Re: My Engine Quit
Do you have a Quadrajet on it? You might have dropped a bowl plug.

Re: My Engine Quit
Try advancing timing quite a bit by rotating distributor. If it jumped timing, it prolly will then run, albeit weakly, if dist. can be turned(advanced direction)far enough.
