Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

So I have been thinking about my problem for the past couple of weeks in a state of depression about having to take my pump to a professional, hat in hand ,admitting defeat that I couldn't fix it with common tools. On Friday after work I was CLR'ing the rest of the cab and started thinking about the fuel level in the tank corresponding with the holes on my sending unit that I drilled to act as my return. I had test the fuel pressure earlier in the week and I was getting 3-5 psi after the filter which was in specs.

So with that thought in my head I grabbed (2) 5 gallon gas cans and jumped in my trusty 65 Chevelle and drove to the store. I filled them both up with diesel with my plan being to fill the fuel tank to the brim to elimante any air being sucked into the system.

When I got home, I dumped both jugs in the truck and it didn't overflow it. So I took one jug and ran back up to the store and filled it up. It didn't take much of the second jug to overfill it.

I then took and started the truck. It still had a miss but it was running much better and had a fuel haze. I found the dead miss to be on the #2 cylinder so I am gonna swap the injector with #3 to see if the miss follows the injector. I have my fingers crossed that it will. If it does I am going to get some 5 x .012 hole injectors on the way and replace them all.

I also purchased a new pickup tube to eliminate any air getting into the return side. I think the main problem comes from the bottom of the tank supply outlet. I had checked the fuel flow by removing the hose and I had good flow. I think that when the lift pump pulled a vacuum on it that it was causing a whirlpool effect on the fuel causing me to get air and fuel into the pump. If the truck continues to act up I am going to purchase a bulkhead to add to the top and use the original pickup tube for my supply like my Canadian friend 6BT 56.

I hope this was the problem all along but the fact that my timer piston in my injection pump was locked up still makes me happy that I addressed the pump. I will update as soon as I get some more news.

Also as a side note I started on the wiring and hope to get it finished and installed as soon as I get my new headlight switch. I'm catching a second breath hopefully.

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

Hey bud . Glad to see you on track . I'm thinkin your right on track with the supply in the bottom of the tank. It should work but who knows. If you hook it to the new sender as the feed and put the return back into the top of the tank that should work . Thats what I did and So far so good. Not under load yet tho. The fitting I used was a billge plug for a boat . Brass plate with 3 hole in it . 1/2 inch pipe it think . They are cheep and avilable anywhere . There is a pic on my thread . My thought was if you were to keep the pick up in the bottom of the tank at low fuel during sloshing around you could have some problems. These 5.9's dont like air at all !!!

I have an electrical question. Does anyone know of fuses that should be added to the original wiring harness for extra protection.

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

As long as every individual circuit is fused thats what counts. I like to add a big fuse inline powering the fuse box its self when rigging a boat from scratch. Actually I should say a breaker , you can reset them in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere !

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

I have seen auto reset ones in the trucking industry, but its been a while. I added a aftermarket fuse box to my truck. LMC has a nice headlight harness that has relays, my truck melted that whole harness clear up to the headlight switch before I got it.

What size do you make that big inline fuse? I guess it depends on the size of what it is feeding. I was going to add one big inline fuse supply the main power to the harness which would be headlights, running lights, brake lights, gauge lights, fuel gauge, and I think that's it. I got my alternator wired up this weekend. Glad to be charging that big battery now. I also installed the key and gas pedal. It feels good to crank the truck with the switch. I think I am going to run a manual fuel shutoff instead of the solenoid.

Also on a side note. Does anyone know if my injectors should be loose when I remove the hold down nuts? I had to use a puller to remove them all last time and now all I have to do is pull them out with my hand. I found my miss. It was a bad injector. It took it apart because I believe the nozzle is clogged. I am going to try to clean it and reinstall it.

Everything I have read says the main wire should be on a fusible link, not fuse or circuit breaker. If something goes bad enough to break the link, you need to find and fix it. Resetting the breaker or putting in a new fuse without fixing the problem might cause more damage to the wiring, start a fire, etc. Then you can individually fuse the component circuits.

Hi Luther . I gather from the pics and vids of the old ram this truck will see some off road use. I agree abt fixing the problem , but if you in nowhere you may be able to easily fix the problem. You cant fix a fuseable link. But you sure can reset a breaker to get home or at least some lights on. This is one of the reasions boats are mostly all breakers. Just incase you abt go go over niagra falls you can hopefully get movin to saftey then assess the short.

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

I might have said this the wrong way but I don't have an electrical problem with my exisiting harness. I was just wondering if I should add an extra fuse to the main power feed to the headlight switch as extra protection. The headlight switch has a fuse built in but it is the only fuse I see in the entire wiring harness.

Is a fusible link always two AWG sizes smaller? Example using a 14 gauge fusible link on a 10 gauge wire?

Hopefully that link will work for you but it is a video of the truck running. It now has no misses and runs like a sowing machine. Glad to have finally solved this problem. It is always a good feeling to fix something like this. And now I know how my pump works too :p. The miss was caused by a clogged injector nozzle. I bought some brake cleaner that the red plastic straw would fit into the supply for the nozzle and it cleaned it right up. Saved $60 dollars doing that myself. It is not pop tested but I am working on building a DIY Pop Tester out of an old bottle jack. It is amazing how clean this new diesel runs. My old engine would smoke and haze like crazy. I couldn't even stay in the garage with it running.

I meant sewing machine But since this Cummins B series engine also came in combines and other farm equipment, sowing machine will also work. :p

Glad to hear yours is going your way! I can't wait to see some pictures on your thread. Also I haven't decided what fan to use yet. I hope to use one I have but it will definitely be a slimline.

I hope to update my thread tomorrow because I drove my truck up and down the street this afternoon.

This is a sweet build man! I always wanted to do this to a '55 chevy 6400 (2 ton) I wanted it on a 1 ton 1st or 2nd gen 12 valve cummins dually. Hauler or stake body, original sun baked farm truck paint, a few dings, and some plain 20 inch steel rims. Add a receiver hitch and a gooseneck ball. Again, old looking farm wheels but with modern tires and safety. Put in seat belts, make the interior look like it just rolled off the assembly line in 1955. Black or grey tuck and roll interior. Fuel tank between frame rails under the bed. 4wd manual transmission.

Thanks man! I agree with you. I would like to take a long flat bed or dump truck in this year range or a 60-66 C60 and find a wrecked non intercooled D250 for a drive train swap. That way it would still be a 6 cylinder and you wouldn't have to worry about the intercooler. Plus you would have the low gear of the Getrag combined with the 2 speed rear axle and overdrive for cruising. I admit that I have a problem of projects that I dream up

By the sounds of the truck you descibed you would like this truck Rock Tonka is doing. It is a great build and a beautiful truck... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=409469

Re: 1955 12 Valve NAPCO Clone

Here are some poser pics when I got back from my ride around the neighborhood yesterday. First impressions were pretty good. Alot of little problems arose but the are easy to fix compared to injection pumps and injectors now.

I got my headlight switch in and got my harness all wrapped with the harness wrap. That stuff is great. It is a much cleaner appearance and easier to apply than electrical tape. I hope to get some pictures of the harness tonight to add. I plan on working on wiring most of the night.
