putting it ALL back together

HI guys, I have recently picked up a 70 sb that is not assembled.

I have a rolling chassis w/ no steering installed yet and motor/trans are semi mounted.


What is the best order to reassemble, assuming I have all of the parts.

Welcome to the board.... Maybe you could show some pics and more details about the truck to help answer your questions. Also purchasing Assembly manuals will greatly reduce time in putting it back together. Welcome to the 67-72 truck world!

That thing looks pretty clean , nice starting point to the truck

If I was doing it, while you have all the body off I would get all the driveline in and make sure all the brakes lines and such are good and tight. In otherwords, while its easy, get everything you would have to get under the truck done while you have easy access then once you have the drivetrain and brakes and as much engine stuff done as you can, put the cab back on and start with steering and electrical and proceed from there. I am sure others wil chime in with other things or a better direction, good luck.

That sounds like a plan.
I also have a core support that is pretty rusty, no holes, just lots of surface rust.

What options do I have removing the rust?

Well either sandblasting it or a wire wheel would be my suggestion thats about all for removing the rust then once you get a good look at the clean surface determine if its still useable and go from there

So , My truck didn't come with any steering components?
I have recently picked up a steering box, pitman arm and steering pump.
Not sure what else I need? E.g. Tie rod and ends and things?
Any help would be appreciated.

I would look on ebay for factory maintenance manual (weaver82).
Then I would pick one system like the brakes (jmorri34) and concentrate on brakes till you are confident they are ok.
I don't like buying a bunch of part's I'm not ready for; but other people do.

Oh yeah: take lots of photos

Your going to need an assembly manual and a good shop manual like a factory or chiltons. They have all the detailed info you to need to put that thing back together. I bought the digital versions, way easier to use than hard bound. Also get an LMC catalog, great exploded views.

Welcome to the forum, get your self a good manual. This is just a 3d puzzle and don,t buy parts until you are ready to use them. Sometimes like a steering gear may seem like a good deal, then you find a complete take off for less money. You need the entire package.Hvae fun and we LOVE pictures.

you might want to start by putting a set of front springs in there.
( but I guess you knew that already)
if your going with a power steering gearbox , start looking for those hard to find power steering brackets and pulleys, they come up every once in a while on the parts board, and flea bay. do your homework on them first because there are several variations of them.
looks like a great start to a great truck. Oh and I see that its already converted to the 71 - 72 front disc brakes, great score man.

You can download usable copies of the factory chassis service manual and the overhaul manual at this link. An assembly manual would be good to have too.

However being as you bought a project, and a modified one at that, without much background it might be a good idea to post over at 'SoCal checkin' in' and let the local guys know you are around. Hosting a get together would probably result in a number of skilled eyes on your project with good advice.

I will definitely will be picking up a manual, just not sure which one or
where from yet?

Here are some pics of all of my brake components. The rear brakes are
not disc, I do want to convert them ASAP.

I see some brake lines (red arrow) in the frame rail but it looks like it goes
from one rear wheel ( about a foot away) to underneath the cab and
then back to the other rear wheel (also about a foot away). I also have the booster bracket that is not pictured.
Is the yellow arrow pointing to a parking brake cable?

Not sure what am I missing, any advice?

Yellow arrow is a parking brake cable. Red arrows are pointing to brake lines. The main line comes down the pass frame rail, in behind a cross member to a flex line. The flex line runs to a distribution block where the line splits to each wheel just above the differential. This is where the LMC catalog would come in handy, here's an example.

Coming down, one goes to the rear, one goes into a junction feeding both front wheels.

I'm going to purchase some disc rear brakes ASAP.

Can someone help me with the steering?
I have a power steering pump, bracket, power steering gear box and pitman arm.
I don't know what else I need.

I am waiting for the Pomona swapmeet to purchase all of the service /overhaul/assembly manuals needed.
