Steering Column Through Firewall - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Still working on cleaning up the engine compartment before I put my Vortec motor in. I received some parts today (don't you love seeing the UPS truck), including the steering column firewall seal. The air blowing through there in the wintertime gets really cold.

Here's my question: How much of the steering column needs to come apart to install the new seal? I'm going to be pulling the PS gearbox anyway, so I think I just need to remove the column shifter (auto trans). Does that sound right? Anything else I should know?

I had to diss assemble the whole column didn't want to try and stretch the seal over the shift bracket

Yep complete dissassemble or others have reported that they have carefully bent the shifter arm down and then installed the seal and then bent the arm back with no ill effect.

Guess it just depends if you feel lucky.

If you take it all apart then that is a good excuse to paint or powder coat it and make it look nice.

Here's an idea for you go to a hobby store ask for the glue that is used for gluing Rc car tires to wheels that stuff works great. Just cut the seal with a good razor blade and re glue. I've done this before works great. For those that don't want to disassemble.

Here's an idea for you go to a hobby store ask for the glue that is used for gluing Rc car tires to wheels that stuff works great. Just cut the seal with a good razor blade and re glue. I've done this before works great. For those that don't want to disassemble.

i didnt disassemble mine i just worked mine slowly over the arm and it didnt rip .i got mine at lmc truck to.

I decided to disassembly my column to change the seal and then discovered that the lower bearing had come completely apart. So now that has turned into repainting and rebuilding the whole column
