Re: Macco Paint?

You will get what you pay for, is the best advice I can offer. Lots of time good paint cost more than they charge for a complet paint job.

Maaco is independently owned and operated. Some do great work, some don't. It is best to research your local shop and ask around.

Re: Macco Paint?

I know my old boss had good luck with them on his cars (not show cars)

Based on this, I'm planning on having them shoot my GMC in a few months. Since this is now my daily driver, I don't need a real fancy paint job, its rust free and the current paint is in pretty good shape. Mainly I'm just having it painted since the bed is a different color.

Re: Macco Paint?

I know they do a LOT of painting and it will most likely be decent looking.

Bodywork is where they make their money! Make sure you get a quote up front. It may not be much more to go to a real body shop.

Re: Macco Paint?

I just had a "good" shop give me a quote on repainting my ext cab silverado. The body is excellent and they'll already be fixing the DS bedside and ext cab area from a deer strike... $2500.

On most maaco jobs I've seen the paint looks great but the body/prep work makes it look bad (most likely backyard bodywork and had maaco scuff n shoot).

Re: Macco Paint?

You have to watch out, like previously stated, on their prep job. A friend of mine primed his truck and took it to them and all they did was spray it without cleaning the surface. Where he would put his hand on the bed rail while opening his door orange peeled the paint. They didn't clean any of the body and it peeled from the hand prints. I guess you really get what you pay for. He didn't spend much and it showed.

Re: Macco Paint?

Oddly enough you really just need to go have them look at your truck. Being independently owned and operated......most Maaco shops also operate as a full line body shop. They should advise you on whether you should paint cheap of if it is possible to look good when done.
As mentioned before if you go to look for a $500 paint job......you will get a $500 paint job. Our local Maaco does Rod and Custom work as well and puts out some of the best show cars work in the area. But those jobs cost several thousand dollars.

Take a body/paint class at a trade school. Do the work right yourself. Save money, gain skills, brag about doing it yourself.

Re: Macco Paint?

I'm definitely not an expert, but i have learned a few things doing my truck.

If you get a cheap paint job, it WILL need to be redone down the road. And when it's time to fix it, you'll be stripping all that Maaco paint and cursing them.

I would advise you to not do it, unless you won't be keeping the truck too long.

Re: Macco Paint?

Years ago my brother-inlaws friend had a Cutlass paint there, car was yellow and he had them paint it maroon. Well they painted everything did not tape off anything and even painted the white seats (well over spray) motor tires man it was a mess.

As was said make sure they do good work I have seen cars they have painted since and they looked fine.

Re: Macco Paint?

As already stated, each franchise is different.

Go look at the cars that have recently exited the spray booth, ready for the owners to pick up. That is how to tell how well they are masking, and if they are careful about overspray.

I was thrilled with the results of an '89 chevy I used to have, not so thrilled as a return customer, as that location had changed ownership in the meantime.

One plus- Their spray guy is usually pretty good- He does nothing but spray cars 40 hours a week, as others do all the prep.

Your worring about what kind of paint job they are going to do for less than $1000.00? U said yourself it's just temporary.

Re: Macco Paint?

Paint it yourself, us your garage or a friends, one long weekend and you'd be done, spend some time on youtube learning how to paint and set the gun up properly, buy a gun for $30 or less at harbor freight or buy a complete paint/gun set up online from summit or the like. I painted mine in a garage and people can't believe it and I had never painted a vehicle before. I'm not brag'n just saying it not rocket science.

Have Fun

The guy who did mine did a wonderful job. He took almost 6 months to do it but that was OK to after I saw it. I have less than $3000.00 in it and I'm tickled to death. It looks better today than it has ever looked before.

Re: Macco Paint?

It's a good skill to know, just think if you can paint it yourself what else you can do. And it just gives the cool factor that you did it yourself just think maybe you would rebuild an engine and tranny yourself too

Re: Macco Paint?

If you're looking for cheap and temporary, I would definitely give Maaco a good hard look. I had my truck painted there about 6 months ago and they did a great job on the two tone paint for about $940. Here's a thread with before and after shots: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=553289

Their paint job is great - no drips, runs, orange peel, missed spots, etc. I was worried about the masking on the two tone but they did a great job with that too.

I took everything off the truck (door handles, trim, bumpers, grill, etc.) when I dropped it off to make it as easy on them as possible. I did my own body work so I can't comment on their body work skills.

I will say that their prep sanding isn't the best, so you should consider taking care of that before you drop it off. I was assured that they would sand smooth the paint chips and other marks in the old paint (which was super nasty), and they got about 75% of them but there are still a lot of chips, etc. showing through. I'm still fine with it because the truck looks 100x better than when it went in, but if I had it to do over again I would have sanded everything smooth myself and then just let them scuff sand everything for paint.

Good luck!

Well, for $940 you definitely got more than your money's worth!

Very nice!
