Re: WTB: Factory tow hitch and wire harness.

JC Whitney still sells the trailer wiring harness for around $20. I passed on a class 3 receiver at the swap meetlast weekend for $50 since i already have one for both of my trucks. Do some research and find pn's from a few mfr., pumch them in ebay, save the search and have it notify you when new items are listed. I bought a new one piece one from a liquidator that didnt even bother to post what it fit, only the part no. For $75 shipped (!) i bouhgught the other used here for $50 shipped. (Thats prety low considering the weight, but it was one that the ends unbolted on.

I have this hitch, still on the truck. Can include all nuts, bolts, washers, etc....no wiring though. $60+ the ride.

Budnikguy, i think that hitch is for a drop/step bumper and not correct for a sport bumper. but correct me if i'm wrong

I don't think the receiver hitch were too popular or even existed then.

Here is a picture of one that works with a sport bumper, might work depending on how much you want to tow.

ok...what history book are you reading from?!!!

my 72 Suburban dealer brochure and 72 accessory catalog mention such things. there have been heavy trailers around since way before the 67-72 era trucks. such loads are well beyond the capacity of a little class 1 draw hitch like you have there. my dad's 72 burb came with one of those dinky things (it even bolted to the body, not the frame) and he ditched it in short order in favor of a receiver style class 3 out of junkyard that he modified to fit. that was in the early-mid 80's.

budnikguy's hitch is a drop unit for a lifted truck or to clear a step bumper. with a sport bumper you need a hitch that tucks the receiver tube up higher. the suburban frame steps down at the back, so i had to have the "ears" modified to fit so i could use the class V hitch that i wanted.

I would like to see pictures of the receiver hitches the accessory catalog mentions. I am not saying I doubt your word, but I would like to see pictures for my own sake as I too would be interested in that type of hitch that looks period correct.

They also had the heavy step bumpers for larger loads but I have never seen a 2" type of hitch that would have been installed back then.

Re: WTB: Factory tow hitch and wire harness.

from my (reproduction) 1972 Accessory booklet:

from my 1972 Chevrolet Trailering Guide:

I also have a 72 Chevy Wagons (Vega to Suburban) brochure and 1972 Chevy RV Guide (pickup campers, chassis cab, and GM powered motor homes, etc). If you plan to get into trailer towing and don't have a sway bar....get one! my suggestion....look to a 73-87 1 ton or camper special with the 1-1/4 bar. it will fit like factory, only thicker!
