Laying Frame 454 header choices

HEya Guys. Got a Question for ya. I'm slowly working on my 72 swb and I want to lay fram with it. My biggest obstical atm with going any lower than I am right now is My long tube headers and the 3.5in exaust running along the bottom of the frame rails. I guess Im looking for header sugs and routeing. I want to keep my 50 series Flowmasters and turn downs just now sure where to put them once im down on the ground. Any thoughts, pics, sugs would be great. even sarcastic ones.

Re: Laying Frame 454 header choices

Im running a bbc, used a weld up header kit and made some fender well style headers. That lets the exhaust and mufflers run in the area between the frame and the rocker. My headers have 2 1/4 primary tubes and 4" collecters. Have a step down to 3" exhaust and 50 series flowmasters. My entire exhaust is above the bottom of the rockers. Can post some pics atter work if you want.

Re: Laying Frame 454 header choices

General consensus is that Chevelle mid-length headers fit and allow tightest tuck of exhaust.

Re: Laying Frame 454 header choices

Got a few pics of the exhaust. I made 2 sets. The first was a case of using what I had at the time, old long tubes.Cut them apart, reconfigured them how I wanted them. collector dumped just over the frame rail. The second set was a fresh set, bigger primarys and much longer.Collector is down behind the wheel.

First set:

Second set:

Side by side:

Second set ceramic coated:

Basically you could make them as long or short as you wanted. You could even use your current long tubes and cut them up. Obliviously, the shorter you keep them the higher and tighter you can keep your exhaust. Depending on your rear suspension set up, you may have trouble trying to run the exhaust inside the frame rails.

Here is a couple pics of the exhaust under the truck.

It takes a little time to make a set,but if you use what you already have,it only thing it will cost you is time.
If this route is not for you, the chevelle headers seem to work very well, at least from what I have seen on other peoples builds.

Maybe on the Chevelle it isn't compatible. I have a stock auto column in my 67. No issues. Had exhaust run on it yesterday and no issues there either.
