Factorystock, how do you tell the difference between the 9000 axle and the 11 axle, my 1965 C80 has the wide fenders and cupped bearing caps.

Interesting that you mentioned the Front Bumper. That was the only thing that I wasn't sure about. I had believed that my Front Bumper was different and was larger. You just taught me something. I never realized that it was a tell-tale sign of a 6000 Series truck.

Hard to tell, but very possible, there were many different design cast spoke wheels. Look for the data plate near the kick panel. What is your GVW? Do you have air brakes and the 23,000 rear axle? Most air trucks with the 23 rear have the 11 front.

Here is the large bumper GMC. These trucks are pretty rare, the heavier the GVW, the lower the production numbers. Not sure of the ratio, but I would say 1 6500 series built for 100 4000 series built. This 6500 has the big Eaton 23,000 lb rear axle and probably the 11,000 lb front.

As far as I can see that Front Bumper looks like the one. I sure do agree that they are pretty rare. I drove that truck for 3 years and could never find another 6500 in my travels. That was back in the early to mid 70's. Still to this day, in all my travels from Maine to Florida and through countless junk yards, I still haven't found another. If it weren't for the picture that you have posted and one or two others that I have just found in the last couple of years, I would not have even seen an image of another one.

I wasn't into numbers back then, but I remember the weight and capacity painted on the side of the truck adding up to 32,000. I agree that it was 11 Fronts and 23 Rears.

A much better shot of the bumper. These trucks are brutes! Looks like a 11K front axle with Budds to me. This is a publicity photo, I've only seen 2 or 3 ever in person.

Well, I goofed on my simple math, 11 and 23 does not equal 32, lol.

I believe my '62 GMC 6500 had 9 Fronts.

...just want to make that clear.

Great shot of another 6500. That one looks exactly like mine did right down to the smallest detail, except for the Budd wheels of course, but as mentioned above, I believe mine only had 9 Fronts.

Although when the truck got reconditioned in about 1972, the mechanic added a couple of more Leafs in-between the others on the Front End. When I went in the garage one day to check on the progress, the truck looked pretty much finished and I asked him when he was going to take it off the jacks. He looked at me funny and said "It's already off the jacks"!!

The truck sat pretty close to the truck pictured above. It probably ended up really having about 11 Fronts after the spring work he did on it. I remember him saying that it should have been that way in the first place.

Interesting pictures.

First one is a nice Heavy Medium.

Second one only has 5 Lugs on the Front. That's pretty different for a Tandem. Interesting place for a Spare too. We were just talking about Spares.

Third is a nice Heavy '62. Just about has to be a C-80. Wonder what is under the hood?

Fourth one looks Detroit powered. Probably a 4-71.

Hey Bill, I liked your over view so much I thought I'd give you some more, different people see different things. Its like pic number 4, look at the way that cheesey little muffler is mounted like that thing is going to do that 471 any good anyway, and see the explosive placards on the trailer. I like the southwest tractor the best on this batch.

I've tried to google part of that southwest address on the building but have not had any luck yet. Anyone got any ideas on state and location?

Other than what's on the sign, the only other indication I can see is the Spoke Wheels which, of course, usually means East Coast.

The truck looks brand new and I can't tell if it is a '60 or a '61, but I see 3 newer vehicles there. Two are '62 Chevy cars.
