Square Body Coil Overs?
My baby is a full frame off so I have a fully powdercoated frame/ crossmember etc.
I really HATE the air ride that I put into the truck. Has anyone ever modifed their stock spring area and drilled the top of the spring cup and lower control arm to do a coil over in the truck? I know there are lots of cross member kits out there but funds are tight and I don't want to have to try and get the crossmember out etc. Any other thoughts on what to do other then just put coils in the front?

Just out of curiosity, why do you hate the air ride? as for the coil overs, ive never done it, but with a little fab work and support, it shouldn't be too hard.

Re: Square Body Coil Overs?
I just care about going up and down, just want it at one height and call it a day. I kinda sold myself on going with it because of the deal I was getting, thought it would be "cool" etc etc but just not a big fan of it.
I just want to drive my truck hard and have fun.

Re: Square Body Coil Overs?
you can run the accuair setup and have it maintain your ride height, even through hard cornering and even autocross.. i mean look at the ridetech guys. their camaro and c10 is rediculous.. they can tear up an auto x course.. How is your setup done right now?

Re: Square Body Coil Overs?
I have the Level 2 Ridetech kit with the rear air bar, upper and lower control arms etc. Just no sensors.
Not sure if it's the tank or what but I can never get the thing level, even if I dial in the same pressure on the screen. It's a little frusterating.

Re: Square Body Coil Overs?
you will generally not have the same pressure at each corner everytime.. when it comes to a truck i have found that a 6 valve setup works best. 4 for the front (corners) and 2 for the rear(tied together). when you lift your truck and level the front, the rear will always follow. Just have good shocks all the way around and your air transfer is minimal.

Re: Square Body Coil Overs?
If you have their valve block, i would just plug the fill ports from one of the rear valves and tee the other together and use your rear up/down switch.

Re: Square Body Coil Overs?
So the rear would lift off of one switch? What does that achieve?

Re: Square Body Coil Overs?
The way we plumb most of our pickups, not suvs, is using 6 valves. You can control L/R front and then the rear as 1. You lift your truck up, and level the front by sight and feel, not by pressure, and your rear end will always follow. There isn't enough weight in the rear to justify an 8 valve setup. As for your pressure, set the truck on a flat ground, trim it up to your likings for height and levelness. Then get in, and you may have to adjust for your weight a little. Then drive around and feel where level is and watch your hood line. Pressure will change with weight, fuel weights, temperature.. trying to level with pressure isn't that accurate.

Re: Square Body Coil Overs?
Why not just use a system with level sensors at all four wheels? Using 6valves and all that is just silly.
I am using the Accuair valves with the Dakota Digital controler which uses pressure And level sensors at each wheel. Set your height presets on a level surface one time. Now it awalys goes to the same height matter what load. Back on topic, I thought about a coilover setup where I would use f body or corvette (c5) aftermarket coilover shocks & springs. Since the shock is so long I would mount it right next to the lower ball joint and run it through the upper control arm and mount the top to a shock hoop. The hoop would be welded to the frame rails and have a cross bar connecting both sides either in front of or around the carb/air cleaner. On the rear I would use a triangelated four bar and build a shock hoop however high needed to mount the shock. I would use SW or some 3 way adjustable shocks and big sway bars.. maybe even a full cage to tie everything together. Coilover shocks & springs could be had for $1000 on the low end for both front and rear. Thats what I was thinking. But I like freeway driving with my bumper 6" off the ground. Can"t do that without air.

Re: Square Body Coil Overs?
Just now seen this, simple 4 wheels they need to keep the air separate 8 valves or a valve block is needed or you will have air transfer from side to side under a load. if i have it correct you setup is off a manual adjustment and you need an e-level with sensors, just set it and forget it. also look into adding sway bars to help kill body roll.

Re: Square Body Coil Overs?
If you do change your mind and go Accuair hit up some of our vendors on here and get a better deal.

Re: Square Body Coil Overs?
Sorry for the mis communication, I thought you were running individual switches. Pressure based auto setups don't work that well.. use the accu air height sensors and you will be much happier.
As for the coil over setup, I wouldn't use a set that is for another vehicle, unless your getting them hella cheap. I would use a universal setup that fits in your space that you have. Posted via Mobile Device |
