Powerglide Transmission Question?

As I posted a few days ago, I'm in the process of putting my 1965 C10 283 c.i. w/powerglide back together. I took the transmission to a PG specialist with 37 years of experience and this is what I learned: He said that the transmission has a reverse pump which would allow the vehicle to be pull started. During the pull process, the pump builds up fluid pressure until the converter engages and turns the engine over.

True or False? Is he blowing smoke up my "exhaust"? Input folks......

Re: Powerglide Transmission Question?

Yes, powerglides can be used to turn a motor over, you can push start a vehicle with them.

Is this true of all PG's or just specific models/years?

The PG mechanic said that it may take up to 30 mph to start so pushing by hand would seem out of the question.

Re: Powerglide Transmission Question?

Yep. Had a 64 Chebby with a power glide. Many a cold winter had to push start it. Couldn't afford a good battery back in the 70's. I remember the engine turning over at 22 MPH.
