2 for 1, My son's first Square Build

Got more work done this weekend. During the week nights after I got back in town, I blocked out one of the front fenders and started on the rear fenders. On the front, I went thru the primers all the way to the metal in a few places and had to beat down a few high spots and re-skin coat the area around the shaved marker light. This was the worst fender, so I expected to do extra work on it. I did some more work on the cab seam and a few areas where we took off the drip rails. I cleaned all the metal and shot epoxy primer over the outside of the cab, the front fender, the core support, brake booster, and the underside of the metal bed floor.

While the epoxy was wet, I looked over the cab and the roof looks terible. Small hail dents everywhere...The whole roof is going to get skim coated to make it look right. Still got some work to do on the cab, but we made progress.





From this angle you can see we need to work on the cab wall below the window...

Yeah using the fleetside bedfloor, was cheaper than buying/making another wood floor, and will be more durable.

well, my drivers license appointment is for june 21 at 2:30. i'm out of school and too young to get a job, so until then i'm home everyday/allday. My dad doesn't think it's doable to get from where we are now to painted and put together by then/around then. i had really looked forward to driving this truck for the majority of this summer. rear wheels should be here this week, and the fronts a little lator, i don't want to show any pictures of the wheels until it's painted and put together, just to be fun. as it stands we are done with metalwork as far as i know, and we plan on having the cab under coated in raptor liner along with other parts this week. any ideas on how to get this thing done any quicker? i'm dying to see it done, and i really wanna drive.

Got quite a bit doen this weekend. The underside and firewall are ready for another coat of epoxy. After the epoxy, the underside will be shot with Raptor liner and will be done. The firewall will get a couple of coats of slick sand to block out, then sealer and some paint. Once the firewall is painted the cab should go back on the frame for the last time once the brake lines and fuel lines are done.

We also got the roof of the cab skim coated and Korbin will work on it today to get it knocked down with an 8" DA and ready for epoxy again.





We will keep at it everyday till its done...

I haven't taken any pictures of our progress, but we have been at it everyday. The outside of the cab is in epoxy and next will come a few coats of Slick Sand on the outside. I hope to get the inside of the cab shot with epoxy and a coat of slick sand so that we can move forward from the body work stage. Korbin is getting restless since his 16th birthday is this Sunday. He is getting down since it will not be ready. In Texas, you have to make an appointment to take your driver's test. My wife called about a month ago and the local office did not have a time available until late July. She called the county next to us, that office had a slot available on the 21st of June. So he takes his test then. That office is about as close as the local office from our house so no big deal.

We still plan to go to Heat Wave in Round Rock at the end of July with the Truck. We need all the support we can get...

WOW! Truck is coming along nicely!! Has the entire suspension setup been decided yet? Ready to see some more progress on here!! Wish my dad would have done a father son project with me, so I had to outsource lol. My friends dad taught me most of what I know about cars when we built my nova.

Why the honda hate Korbin? they're not all rice. I've built more hondas than anything else but they were all painted factory colors, no body kits, no underglow or any nonsense like that. But those cars give the greatest satisfaction when you've built a car that originally had all of 80hp and turn it into a 300hp street car that weighs the same as a shopping cart, and handles like a go kart on steroids!

it's not honda hate, it's rice hate! i have tons of respect for guys that build the rediculously powered, tastefully built hondas. it's just kind of a joke towards the guys that put the rediculous body kits, big useless wings, underglow, and other crap.

Well, at this point in the build it's been nothing but bodywork, sand, sand, sand a little more, shoot another coat, sand, sand, lay some filler down, sand, sand, sand, and when it finally looks about right, shoot another coat, and keep sanding! i hate bodywork, but i'm glad i'm taking the time to do it right, because i know i will be much happier with it when i am finished. i just can't wait to be doing stuff like assembly, where you can really see it start coming together.

been ordering a bunch of stuff lately, like a dash pad, SS braided fuel hose, black fittings, red fuel filter, exhaust tubing and mufflers, e brake assembly, mirrors, bumpers, master cylinder. for my birthday, my mom let me order some audio stuff. i got a sundown audio sd-2 10" woofer rated at 500 watts rms, that is a fairly shallow mount so it will fit behind the seat, and a single din kenwood excelon head unit. for the rest of the audio system i will be ordering alpine type s 6.5" coaxial speakers, and a hifonics amplifier. my goal as far as that goes is a really good, crisp sounding stereo that wont give me any trouble after it's installed. for exhaust we ordered a speedway 2.5" exhasut kit, a summit 2.5" x pipe kit, and 2.5" single in single out magnaflow mufflers. i'm probably forgetting a whole buncha stuff so just ask.

Just started reading, still have most of it to go. Just wanted to chime in how cool this project is. I got my '87 when I was 17 and did a lot of work on it with my Dad. This kind of stuff cannot be beat. Awesome stuff guys.

We have accomplished a bunch over the last few days (week?). We did not take many in progress pictures, to wrapped up in getting things done. Yesterday morning I got up early and finished spraying what epoxy I had on the inside of the truck. I had a bit left over so the roof got another coat on top of the body filler to help seal it before spraying the Slick Sand. Once that was dry, I tipped the cab on its back and worked on the bottom side.

I got this far before stopping to shower for Lunch with my family with my Mom & Dad and my sister's family for Father's Day and Korbin's 16th Birthday.:


After Lunch and a good visit with family, I got back on the truck. I brushed on a coat of Chassis Saver paint to seal it up against the elements since I had ran out of epoxy that morning. it covered really well and looked pretty good that way. After letting it dry for a few hours, I seam sealed a few spots we had missed and then let that cure out per the directions before the next step. Here is a shot before the seam sealer was applied:


Got Korbin out to help, and we taped up and covered EVEYTHING we did not want Raptor Liner on. We then started spraying the liner on the bottom of the cab. We used the tintable one and mixed it with the RED base coat we are going to use. I took a bit to get an even texture over the whole floor and it is not even everywhere, but it looks good to us. Besides, this is on the underside that you won't even see most of the time....


After work today, we will get it back upright and get some Slick Sand sprayed on the interior sheetmetal that gets paint and hopefully have time to get some on the roof and back cab wall for the first round of blocking on those parts, they are the worst area on the cab.

We had a small set back yesterday. We had a storm blow thru with heavy rain for about 10 minutes. Hard enough winds and rains it took off the roof and walls of our portable garage we are using for a paint booth...Korbin was able to get it back on when the rain stopped. Only damage was to some masking paper and tape that we inside. The rest was just wet and dryed out fine...

Today, I have a buddy coming by with a friend of his that is a painter. Going to see if we can get a little help with getting the paint work completed so I can concentrate on the details of the brakes, fuel system, and other items to get this hoopty ont he road.

Have you had any luck finding any 20x8.5" with a 5.0" bs?
I'm finding the 4.5bs but not the 5.0"

The wheels are a long story. I had spoke to a aewheel employee and was told that the ones we wanted were in production, that turned out to be wrong. I was sent a pair of 4.5" bs wheels. Well after a number of phone calls, a facebook message and some hoping and praying, I was told last week that they are building me a pair with 5.0"bs. I hope to have an update today with what is going on with them. BTW, Tommy Lee, (ksbrktracer) on here is a great resource for wheels. He has gone above and beyond to help me with these wheels.

well, since the word got out, i figured i might as well post some pics of em! eagle alloys 225 in a 20x10 with a 5.5" bs wrapped in 315/35/20 toyo proxes st II's. i think it's the perfect amount of sidewall/treadwidth for a street truck!







here's a teaser of victory red, or how PPG shopline labels it "chili pepper red" basecoat. very nice color, i really like the decision i made to use it.


Been getting lots of parts lately, a black dash pad, black gauges, wiring harness, interior trim pieces, exhaust stuff, audio stuff, and lotsa other crap! it's been like christmas everyday here!

the exhaust is all 2.5", with cutouts before the x pipe, into 2 magnaflow SI/SO mufflers dumped before the axle. plan on buying some DMH or QTP electric cutouts in the future.

Gauges are off of ebay, but are by a company called marshall insruments, pretty simple, extremely cheap gauges.


As a teenager, i am obligated by the laws of juvenile car modification to have a bumpin stereo, but i thought i would do it right the first time, and use quality stuff, on a budget. the only thing that's slacking is the amp, it's a cheapo brand, but i have a friend that can tune out the distortion. The head unit is a Kenwood Excelon x396, looks to be a quality piece. Subwoofer is a sundown audio sd-2 10" rated to handle 500 watts rms (very underrated). My mom bought the headunit and subwoofer for my birthday. The alpine type s 6.5" coaxial door speakers that will mount in the lower door panel, the 3.5" coaxial speakers that mount in the dash(can't remember the brand lol), and audiipipe apsm-1200 amplifier are all on the way.




Now, i have good news and bad news. Good news is we are having a guy finish the rest of the bodywork and painting for us, we are taking him the cab/doors on saturday. Bad news is i know how much it would've meant for my dad to paint it, and i know how much he hates seeing someone else do it, but we are running out of time, and i feel like we could make it to heat wave if dad did the rest of the work, but it wouldn't be DONE it would just be painted and put together.

I get my license this friday at 2:30, so thats good news, bad news is i have to drive this luxury automobile. it's so fancy that if you're hot, the ac doesn't work, the windows don't roll down, and the vent windows are jammed and broken and stuck, so your pick up truck is forcing you to start conditioning for next baseball season! what a luxury option right? i'm not complaining though, i have something to drive, and it wont be long until i'll be cruisin in MY real truck.


In more news, i have an interview for a cashiers position at sears on monday, so hopefully i will have some ca$h flow soon.

Well plan is to get the cab back, and put the whole truck together including wiring, brake lines, fuel lines, and start putting together the interior. so that when we get the rest of the body back all we have to do is bolt them on. hopefully within the next few weeks we willl have some badass pictures for your viewing pleasure.

How much were those gauges? when I replace my speedo cable with the electronic one for the 700r4, I've been throwing around the idea of using the factory gauge bezel and mounting aftermarket gauges.
