1971 ... boat?

Since I live on the Gulf Coast ... I have been itching to get a period specific boat to pull behind Marilyn. Any suggestions on boats that could be rehabilitated/rebuilt that Marilyn may have pulled back then?

My wife walked up behind me as I was watching a video of a v-drive flatbottom with a 454 BB gettin it across a lake.

She said one simple word ... "No"

I guess it will be more along he lines of an early 70s Mako 19.

Re: 1971 ... boat?

I do like that Glastron!

However, I think a sub 100hp outboard is more the Boss' speed.

Whaler for sure. Big or little you can't go wrong. Where and how would you be using it?

While there are many valid choices their is only one true answer. Lol
hot rod boats only go as fast as you tell them to go. Mine will cruise all day at 25mph.

My 67 and 66 stevens v-drive flatty.
Another board members 67 and 74 mark twain.

Mainly just in and out of the bayous that dot the coast ... very little open water. Just enough to get to the next cove or bayou.

Just me, the wife, and our two pups.

A little 13' would be great for that. Drove about some in a 13' with a 50hp Merc. on a tiller with power tilt/trim...

Re: 1971 ... boat?

But I think you would be more "period correct" with his 68 Hallett.

Re: 1971 ... boat?

Sorry to say but most of these boats would look wrong behind a pickup, too sleek, they belong behind a Chevelle or an Impala. The Boston Whaler, really? How about a little hip? I think a Century Arabian is your ticket, looks the part, is well made boat, and a balance between a kids boat and granddads bass boat, and it straddles the line between vintage and modern era like the trucks do.

It would even look right in avacado green.

Re: 1971 ... boat?

When it comes down to it there are any number of period boats from Jon boats to sailboats that are suitable trailer accessories. Not everyone wants or needs a fast flatbottom or ski boat. Some are not as sexy as others and many period boats are best forgotten. But in the end it comes down to what he wants, needs and can afford. A Whaler in many ways is almost perfect for a drop in a hole exploring boat with its shallow draft and stability. The same cannot be said for an inboard flatbottom or an I/O cruiser. Now if we could just find him a period Sea-Doo...
