Project "Casey" - NASCAR Edition - 1967

Picked this shortbed up in July of last year from a guy in Los Angeles, on Craigslist. It had a 350/350 swap already, 5x5 swap front and rear with discs up front, power steering, headers, Edelbrock everything, and a new radiator. The frame was an actual short frame, rather than cut but doesn't look to be a 67, since it has the clearance for PS. Casting and stamps on the block look to make the engine from a 79 pickup.

Fast forward to nearly a year, after giving her a tune up, tires, smoothie front bumper and a completely new interior (was gutted when I picked her up), here she sits.

The overall plan for Casey is to go "NASCAR". I haven't decided on a final color yet but thinking either a desert tan or high gloss black. Wheels will be Aero Race Wheels in black (ordered today) with Diamond Back Smoothie tires painted with yellow "Goodyear Eagle" jumbo logos. Porterbuilt Mild DM or C-Notch in the rear (still torn on this since I don't want to raise the bed) and a Touring DM up front.

Casey is named after my mother, who passed a few weeks before I picked up the truck. My grandfather called her Casey as a child, short for Karen Christine. He was an engineer and machinist, which got me into what I do now and she ran her own business, also in manufacturing. I plan to make quite a few parts for this build with tools, equipment and knowledge I aquired from both of them, as well as funds they left for me and my brother before they passed. They made it possible and I dedicate this build to them.

Re: Project Casey - 67 Shortbed

One of the wheels arrived yesterday. Mounted it up to a Goodyear Eagle I picked up last week for test fit. Everything looks and fits well. Diamondback Smoothies and the other three Aero wheels are on order and should be here in time for the Brothers show.

I also replaced the doors out with a set I picked up on here a few months back. Finally got around to swapping them out. Old set were rusted out beyond reasonable repair, and these were local for a good price from another forum member with minimal damage (all on the inside behind the door panel and near the hinge area). Exteriors are perfect.

Since picking the truck up I've redone most of the interior, including the gauge cluster. Original gauges, but a new black/"chrome" bezel. Polished up the lens as well since the PO spray painted over most of it.

Under the hood I've done basic tune up stuff, plugs wires, cap/rotor, etc. Added wire looms and Taylor Space Age boot protectors to clean up things a bit and keep them away from the headers. Also added Undercover Innovations "show panels" between the grill and core support and a radiator cover from Brothers to clean up the huge gap and keep the temp down.

What size tire did you end up with on the front of the truck?

325/50R15 front and rear. Wheels are 15x9.5 with 4.5" backspacing all around as well.

Re: Project Casey - 67 Shortbed

maybe plaster it with "contingency decals" like a race car. I like the NASCAR look.

Looking good Ken cannot wait to see it at the show. We will have to park next to each other. What are you actually making the template out of? I used 1/16 nitrile rubber. You can reuse it many times and it can stick really well to avoid any paint leaking through the edges.

Re: Project Casey - 67 Shortbed

I'm going to cut one out of .022" SBS on Monday and test it out on a spare tire I've got laying around. If the paint leaks under the template I'll have some cut out of sticky back vinyl.

Re: Project Casey - 67 Shortbed

I used spray adhesive, very easy to line up for the inevitable re-coat. I don't know if you thought about it or not but I applied a primer coat first to block the petroleum oils from leaching through the paint. even still with two primer coats my white letters turned kind of a cream color on the first round. I have about three coats on now and it has seemed to block the leaching.

Re: Project Casey - 67 Shortbed

I plan to spray black first so any bleeding is only black. Paint should hopefully seal the template to the tire, then a few coats of yellow over the black. I wonder if this is why they have a blue border on most...

Re: Project Casey - 67 Shortbed

Are you going to attempt the blue? I was thinking if you had a laser or some cutter with a minimal kerf then you could cut the blue border out of the same piece then just reinsert to paint the yellow.

Re: Project Casey - 67 Shortbed

I can easily make a template for the blue but at this point I think I'm just going to do a primer coat in black then a few yellow over the top. Running out of time and won't be able to cut another template until next week.

Shoes arrived today!

I love this truck.
I even had to show my girlfriend, she loves it too.
We both think the contrast of the orange doors look awesome.
