which engine came with my truck?

Hello, I'm new to the Forum and pretty new to all of this, so forgive me.

I know from my truck's VIN that it came with a V8, is there a way to find out which size engine it actually came with? Thanks.

Re: which engine came with my truck?

Does the truck still have the sticker on the inside of the glovebox door?
That will tell you.

Re: which engine came with my truck?

Do you have a decal on glove box door, it's called a SPID, ? Look under the seat or seat back for a big piece of paper, it will tell you a lot about how it was built, the spid lists options on your truck....good luck

Re: which engine came with my truck?

What year and what series of truck? That' a start if there is no SPID visible on the glove box door.

Re: which engine came with my truck?

Welcome to the board. There are a lot of clues. Much of it will depend on your truck's originality. The SPID is the easiest start. A build sheet (if you have a "Z" Fremnt built truck) would be better. Fender badges or lack of helps. But like Gary said year and series are a start.

Easy, 307/Powerglide/3.73:1 axle ratio.

Re: which engine came with my truck?

ok, I see where it lists the powerglide in the SPID, but the other information, did you just get that from already knowing what came in the '68?

Re: which engine came with my truck?

Yes, originality and SPID recovery are kind of my speciality.
On your SPID, the VIN tells me it is a '68. The model number, CE10934 tells me it is a 1/2 ton V-8 LWB Fleetside pickup. The purpose of the SPID is to list optional and special equipment, deviations from the base build if you will. So as it does not list an engine it would be the base 307 engine. A transmission is listed. This shows that a Powerglide replaced the standard 3-speed column shift transmission. The ratio is the base ratio for a 307/M35 combo as nither the optional 4.11 nor posi codes are listed on the SPID.

Re: which engine came with my truck?

Thank you guys for the welcome, and thank you Tim for the information.

I'll have to hit you up when my new truck gets here, after I try to figure out what its original equipment was myself. It's a '67 C30 drw wrecker. Can't wait for it to get here, should have got them to snap a pic of the SPID so I could have gotten started on figuring out exactly what it had.

Re: which engine came with my truck?

Two project trucks! Well maybe you can do a wrecker and a road service pickup duo. That white over red is a very classic combo.

Re: which engine came with my truck?

Well, the '67 wrecker is for me, wanted one since I was real little. Love the small back window on them and the lack of side markers among other things. The '68 is going to be for my boy when he starts driving. So that means he and I have about 8-10 years to get it ready for him. But he may no longer want it when he sees the wrecker roll in!

Re: which engine came with my truck?

Build it and call it Mini-Me. If you're interested in going back to basics and want to keep it original, I would not recommend the original 307 even if you can find one because they were soft-cammed turds, rather you might use the Buick 307 used in the 80's. They weren't big on power but they were pretty stout.

Re: which engine came with my truck?

I'll have to give thought to that when we get to the engine. It does have the original 307 in it. It has been a pretty good truck so far but you can tell the engine is in serious need of work or a flat out swap for something else. not bad though for firing right up after sitting for years in a field.

Re: which engine came with my truck?

GM pulled that motor in favor of the 305 which was a good decision, in my opinion but Buick re-cammed it in the early 80s and that move worked well in their favor. I had an '84 Lesabre coupe that I loved with the 307 and with 250k miles, it didn't use but 1 quart between changes

I got he SPID in from the '67 Wrecker and I'm having some trouble telling what all the options are, so if you guys could shed some light on things while I continue trying to search for things that'd be great.

Re: which engine came with my truck?

This was a fairly basic truck as delivered.
67 C30 V-8 chassis cab.
Built in St. Louis.
It has the optional HD rear springs at 4150lb each with the standard HO72 rear axle.
Power drum brakes, gauges and the then optional heater.
The mirrors were a Jr west coast style painted white.
The seat was a standard trim blue vinyl over the optional foam seat vs the standard springs.
The outside was painted white (code 521) and the inside was a fawn color IIRC.
It has the standard V-8 a 283 and the standard 4-speed transmission.
The spare tire carrier and spare wheel(not wheel and tire) were also options on a 1-ton.
It was not a factory DRW truck!
All in all a good basic truck but drums are very difficult to find for it.

Re: which engine came with my truck?

Thanks Tim, that was very helpful. I had managed to guess the v8 correctly but haven't been able to pull away from work too much to do a lot more digging than that.

the engine has been swapped out for a 350 and there is a possibility that the real axle has been switched out, the p/o was unsure about it. so until it actually gets here, I won't know for sure. any idea what the standard ratio was for the HO72?

what 4 speed came in these trucks? was it the Muncie SM465 or something different?
