Ram Horn Exhaust Question
Do the ram horn exhaust manifolds work like headers and are they factory? Were they available for big blocks?

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
The Ramshorns are good as headers for normal street use. They are factory on 55-62 v-8 light trucks & longer on larger trucks. The Corvetts used them with a 2 1/2 in outlet. They are available new at a reasonable price through the aftermarket.

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
Actually on our trucks until 72 on the small blocks.
The Corvette ones are slightly different because of the frame. Just bought a right side from eBay for 43 bucks shipped. Fit perfectly! Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
The new ones can be had with 2.5 inch collectors instead of the stock 2"...should be even better for performance apps.
That is a fine looking motor pictured above! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
I am not sure about availability for the big blocks as I have not seen them but I run them on my 350 built for towing and they are as close to ideal as I can get. I would rather run them over headers for what I use them for. I tow a lot and sometimes some rather heavy loads and I would worry about headers getting a bit too hot and keeping my wiring away from them and the starter as well would be too much of a chore.

2.5" Rams horns have straight down dumps as opposed to the angled back truck ones, however I don't know if dumping straight down will be a fitment issue or not.

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
I have considered them for my 71, looking at it, it appears they would fit but haven't tried it for first hand experience. If someone has installed the straight dumps it would be good to know how it went.

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
Is the dump far enough away from the cross member that it doesn't require an extreme bend in the head pipe to clear?

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
Corvette only big block exhaust manis are free flowing, I think I heard years ago they will fit in a truck. As far as passengers cars they only fit the Corvette. They are pricey.

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
A quick look into LMC catalog shows ram horn manfolds with a different part number of course for the big block engines.
http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/full.aspx?Page=115 My dad's 72 wrecker had a 454 but I don't remember if it had ram horns or not. It may be 73 up big block manifolds of a different design will fit in our 67-72 frames.

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
The block in my truck has casting number 3902406 which according to Mortec.com means its from 1967 and could be a 2 or 4 bolt main. I dont know what the casting numbers are on the heads as I've never had a valve cover off to check. The attached pics are of the exhaust manifolds on the truck now. I don't think they are the originals seeing one of them has 454 written on it. Does the casting numbers on these tell anyone what they are from.

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
Big blocks and small blocks have exhaust ports in different locations. They are evenly spacedon the big blocks (see the picture above) where the small blocks have 2 together in the center.
Therefore they will not work. |

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
Thanks for the reply. I know the small block ram horns wont fit on a big block and that is why I asked if they made them for big blocks as well and so far it seems they only made for for Corvette big blocks.

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
Which after market ram horns do you recomend for SBC 350 to go into my 71 C10? Straight dump or should I get the curved dumps?

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust Question
I don't beleive the Corvette manifolds are "ramshorn" design. The spacing of the small block exhaust ports is what allows for the "ramshorn" design, I guess they could make them for BBC's, but they would look different.
