c10 all over the road?

Hi guys

just had some new radial tryes fitted to my c10, it used to wander the road on the old crossplys so thought id treat myself to a new set of radials,

My trucks got a disc brakes and power steering off a later truck i think,
the truck still weaves bad on the motorways in the tracks left by the big rigs

has anyone else had issues like this?
could the steering box need tightening? or worn steering arm?
on the smaller roads it drives dead straight ?

What are your toe-in settings? Has it been recently aligned?

We had a similiar problen with a vehicle we owned a while back- it had fairly wide tires on the front(55 series on 17" wheels)It would follow ruts in asphalt real bad. Never really fixed the problem, but learned about wide low profile tires, LOL!

Re: c10 all over the road?

The toe setting is also my first thought. The next would be a worn out idler arm. If the toe isn't set slightly inboard at rest, the wheels will point outboard at speed. Each time one side points straight ahead, the other side will be pointing outboard and tend to pull to that side. Once that side points straight ahead, the other side repeats the problem. The result is a wandering vehicle that can't decide what is straight ahead.

With a worn idler arm, the steering box tends to steer the left wheel while the passenger side wobbles around pointing wherever it wants. This can not only cause the vehicle to wander, when everything lines up harmonically it can also cause the front end to shake so hard the vehicle must be slowed down to stop the shaking (depending on how badly the idler arm is worn).

Re: c10 all over the road?

Did you use a multi-piece steering shaft (or run more than one DD joint?)
If so , did you add a steering shaft brace/heim/support bearing?

Mine has a little "bobble" in the steering on jumpy roads or half-lane construction situations. Its because the steering shaft angle required a multi piece shaft, and between the rag joint nd the DD joint the shaft has room to bounce.

This also happens and can make the truck feel like it doesn't have a perfect center on the steering sometimes.

Re: c10 all over the road?

I agree with the above comments. Have it aligned. It sounds like you've got a toe issue.

If you get it aligned, have the tech put as much caster as he can in it. Caster will help it go down the road a lot nicer, and it won't have a tendency to wander.

Re: c10 all over the road?

did you put 2 or 4 radials on?
another source for wander is brken bolts on the steering box and or cracks in the frame around the steering box. it can crack around the bolt holes and be difficult to see. have someone turn the steering wheel and watch and see if the steering box moves. truck sitting on the ground so that there is weight on the wheels
