72 Value

I had 68 shorty project that I had to drop because I lost my job and had to move to get a new one. She went to a good home but that was 4 years ago.

Today I was walking by a garage and there was a very old man sitting out front. I saw the grill peeking out of the garage so I stopped to talk. Turns out he is getting the house ready to sale. He needs to clear out the garage. The 72 shorty has 37K on it original paint No rust and I looked in the right places, she has been in this garage for 35 year. Seat looks new and I could not find a dent.

It is a base model I6 3 on the tree. He seemed worried the truck would not be safe. I told him I was a former GM master tech and I would go over the whole truck. That seem to help.

I offered him $2500 and I will tow it. He did not say no, he asked if I was serious. He asked for my number. If he counter how high should I go? I guess I should say what would the market bare on a truck like this?

Any VW guys out there he had a 70's bug next to it with 900 miles on it (not a typeO). It has never been in the rain. He bought that for his wife new and she did not like that standard shift.

Any idea what the VW will cost? Any rust in the bug?

I can ask him. The factory undercoating has never been wet. Not even a hint of rust.

Re: 72 Value

I am no bug collector but I have owned a couple. They are fun to drive little cars. I am in no hurry to know what he wants since I will be away from all computers for a week starting tomorrow but I am interested in the bug. I will check back next Sunday the 14th and see if you have gotten any info on it. Bugs here are few and rotted. I don't even know what to say about a 900 mile bug. I assume neither have been driven for 35 years. It's going to take a little to get them running but the bug sounds interesting and the truck sounds like an amazing find.

Re: 72 Value

Well I just got off the phone with Joe (the owner). He told me he had a couple of new tires and all the original paper work for the truck. We are going to see what it is going to take to move it. He warned me the interior smells like mildew.

He has not mentioned price so he must be ok with my $2500 offer.

Before I buy I am going to check to see if the motor is seized and if the clutch is rusted up. He even suggested that. I think I would feel guilty trying to get it cheaper. Heck the bed has to be worth 2K. It has never had anything in it.

Re: 72 Value

I'd say 2500 would be a heck of a deal, if the old man stayed under 10k sounds like a good deal. I started a project build and wish now I bought an all original cruiser. I started something I can't afford

Re: 72 Value

I have a friend who is big on bugs and if this gentleman wants to sale it I would bet that my friend would be very interested. He would probably trip over his feet trying to get out the door to get to his house.

Re: 72 Value

$2500 sounds like it could be a good deal for some clean metal. Will look forward to seeing how the story goes. His question back to you about being serious seems to me an indication that he thought it was worth less. Just a hunch...

Re: 72 Value

2500 is a steal for a truck like that on the east coast. Buy it and if you don't like it I'll take it off your hands for the same money, possibly even give you a few hundred for your trouble. Even if you need another 3-4K to fix it up mechanically you're still getting a good deal (that is, if that's in your budget).
