My dad bought a new 1968 six cylinder, three on the tree, and it was prone to hanging up between gears from day one. At sixteen, I couldn't wait to try to speed shift it. I got it hung so bad It took awhile to get it loose. I sure was dreading telling my dad. It was a relief when he told me it had done it to him too.

When the 69's came out, he traded for his first V8, automatic (350/350) truck.

I've heard this before, but only from my dad.

What is the "double clutch?"

A technique where you cycle clutch a 2nd time between gear changes to help sync the gears.

Push in the pedal to shift out of second, let the pedal out, rev it a bit to get the input shaft that's in nuetral up to speed to match the speed of the first gear cluster in the trans which is still rotating and then push the pedal in again and it should snick into first. You gotta do it real fast.

Poor old Steve's not double clutchin'. He never learned how to power shift.
I saw the video his son driving the restored version of that 'stang and he never learned to power shift either!!

There's a decent how-to with pics somewhere on the site here that describes how to use a drill bit to get everything lined up to factory. Having followed those instructions, cleaned up and lubed up everything my 3OTT shifts like it was new. Well worth the half an hour. And yes, the theft prevention benefits of 3OTT make keepin it worth it for me!

Did you see shifts after 6:25?

Back when mine was equipped with 3 on the tree, I swapped out the old shift tube with a new one. She shifted perfectly form then on.

Sounds the same to me.
Steve lifts to shift. Well at least the sound man makes it sound that way.

Wonder if "shift tube" is available anywhere or if it can be repaired if worn?

I like mine. You do have to know how to shift it. Mine used to hang, I adjusted the linkage a tad and it got better. Just found there is definitely an art to it. With mine, when going from 2nd to 1st, I let it snap down to neutral, then deliberately bring lever towards me and then down to first and like that. Really worth knowing as I got tired of burning my arm on the exhaust unjamming it from underneath in some parking lot.

I drive mine daily, no issues shifting, "real patina" 250/3spd. Mostly original except an HEI distributor
