Under Dash A/C unit
Has anyone put an Under Dash A/C unit into one of our trucks? I see pics all the time of the complete systems, but never the under dash system. I would like to keep my original heater setup and just add A/C under the dash. It seems less intrusive to my trucks interior and I get to keep my glove box size intact too!
I would like to see some of the under Dash systems that have been used and possibly the data for them as well… or just the info so I can look the systems up. THX.

Re: Under Dash A/C unit
I'm in the process of installing a Vintage Air under dash AC/heat/defrost unit right now. The same unit is available without heat, but my truck doesn't have factory heat anyway. I'll post some pictures after I get it installed, which should be this weekend.

Re: Under Dash A/C unit
I will be adding an under the dash style next year for that vintage look. Go here:http://www.oldairproducts.com/catalo..._38000000.html
I plan to use the 300 series as I like the ports.

Re: Under Dash A/C unit
First, thx for the interest and the replies.
My concern; is that there is so little dash material to mount such a large unit to. It would seem to want to twist the dash material due to the load and the road roughness. Please, if you can take some pictures while your installing and after, I think we are all interested! Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Under Dash A/C unit
The one I just picked up had one. The guy removed it when taking out the wiring under the dash. Now I get to try to figure out ow to re-install it. It's an Allegro Mark IV. I don't have any experience with them, but it is something I would be interested in re-installing.

Re: Under Dash A/C unit
put one in my 63. it works great, no problems, the weight of the unit isn't all that much for the dash to handle. the brackets along with the stiffness of the hoses supports it quite well. get ready cause it will cool your truck cab for sure.

Re: Under Dash A/C unit
would be the same as any A/C, minus the heater lines.

Re: Under Dash A/C unit
Odd thing is the model I have has a heater symbol and knob on it also. Going to take some serious research before I put it in.

Re: Under Dash A/C unit
I will have to look when I get home. I know there are two hose connections on the rear. I wasn't sure if it was meant for the heater core or compressor.

Re: Under Dash A/C unit
Try this on ebay. Everything goes up under the dash and then the vents run along under the dash lip. http://www.ebay.com/itm/160855632814...84.m1438.l2649

Re: Under Dash A/C unit
A guy on Facebook mentioned having one, so I asked if he could post a pic. He said the nameplate reads "VEEP II"

Re: Under Dash A/C unit
I got my Vintage Air under dash unit mounted this weekend. The dash is still torn apart for wiring, but the defroster lines are and mounting is all hooked up.
It mounts to two bolts on the lip of the dash and two support straps at the back which I hooked up to existing bolts on the firewall. The dash did not deflect at all under the weight of the unit (which isn't too heavy anyway). They have smaller units, but since I live in Las Vegas and it's already hit 117 this year, I got the larger unit. My truck doesn't have any heater either, so I got one with heat as well. It does sometimes get chilly here during the winter. The best part is that while the evaporator is a generic unit, all the underhood parts are specific to 60-66 trucks from the same company.

Re: Under Dash A/C unit
That unit looks great. I'm glad I found this link. Looks like I need to check into these more. Would be great to have A/C in the old truck. I might be missing everything for it other than the under dash unit.
HX, have you looked on EBAY also? I saw some Vintage Air kits on there. That's probably where I will have to buy my parts. |
