Sun Pro gauges
Does anybody else have a problem with sunpro temp gauges? I'm on my second one now the first one quit working altoghether and this one here i think is reading high all the time. Even after sitting all night the needle won't drop back down all the way. It sits on like 180. when it just sits and idles it'll work itself up to 230 and i just put a new 4 core radiator in it with the 1995 thermostat. I'm hoping to hell that damn gauge is just bad. anybody know if you can test them things somehow?

I have had the guts spin inside the guage a little.
As far as having one go bad..I have run sunpro on many cars and trucks over the years and heve never had a single problem out of them. What else would you expect from Snap-on? |

(Snap on owns sun pro)
FYI, Snap On owns Sun, not Sunpro. Sunpro is an inexpensive gauge line owned by Actron.

SunPro is crap. It is made as a cheap throwaway gauge. Spend 50 bucks and get a good autometer. You don't want to trust a expensive engine to a cheap gauge.

I'll have to see if sunpro has a website and visit that to see what possibly might be going on. Hearing a couple different things so if they are from snap-on i'm sure there customer service would be good. But if they ain't ..........well i'll guess i'll find out.

Auto Meter is a quality gauge. I would save your money for better quality.

Yup, they say Snap-On, and Actron.
I have had a $40 Sunpro tach in my truck for over 2 years and i love it. Works great. I also have the $30 cluster of volt/oil/temp guages and they work great too. Sure, Autometers are better, but you can't beat the Sunpro guages for the price.

Like I said...snap on. They own both...among other companies too.
Sun pro and sun are both inexpensive tachs, and acc guages, however, they are not junk. For something that is drivewn on the street, they are more than adiquet. They are more acurate than 75% of the factory guages after 5 years. |

I have been running a sun-pro temp gauge with no problems. If the inner tubing is kinked you could get false reading like you are saying. This tubing is fragile check the entire length for kinks, This is why factory went electrical easy to install no problems down the line.

Sorry to diagree, but the fact is Snap-On does not own Actron (Sunpro). Snap-On, which was started in 1920, is based in Kenosha, WS with its own CEO, etc. Actron (Sunpro), which was started in 1964, is based in Cleveland, OH with its own CEO, etc and manufacturing facility.
Direct from Actron's website: http://www.actron.com/ "Actron is one of the largest suppliers of portable test equipment to professional mechanics. Actron manufactures this line of equipment under its own brand name, Kal-Equip, as well as private label for Mac Tools, NAPA and Matco." "Actron is an approved supplier for Sears, U.S. Department of Defense, Mac Tools, General Motors, NAPA/Balkamp, Ford Rotunda, OTC, Matco and Bear among others." It would appear the reason the Snap-On name appears on Sun tachs along with Actron is because Actron makes these tachs for Snap-On just as they private label many other products as mentioned above.

if you are looking for quality, get Stewart Warner. I have a Stewart Warner tach in my 69, and I love it.

I had a sunpro pos tach, it would give messed up readings all the time. I then got an autometer guage and the problem was fixed. Now I have all autometer guages and they work great. I don't like cheap crap.

Well, i don't have the picture to prove it anymore...however, on the back side of this guage packaging, it said something to teh effect of made by snap on...owned by snap on...something like that. (I bought these last december)
I spoke with my snap on dealer and he told me that in the early 90's, snap on realized that they were falling WAY behinde in the electronic tool department, so bought up a couple small companies and took there R&D and went a couple steps further witht he info to create high quality top of the line tools. Ask any honest snap on guy who has been around a little while and knows his sh!t...he'll tell you the same thing. |

I'm not doubting that the Snap-On name appears on Sunpro gauges, packaging, paperwork, etc. Licensing and marketing agreements have been common place in business for decades. As an example, the drug company I work for makes drugs for other drug companies with their names on them. It would, however be quite unusual for two companies to have separate CEO's if one is owned by the other. Typically, subsideries or divisions of a parent company have, Presidents, Executive V.P.s, V.P.s, General Managers, etc. I tell you what, I will call the investment relations offices of both companies Monday and find out what connection, if any, exists between Snap-On and Sunpro and post it at this thread.

Okay, here is the scoop directly from the corporate offices of both Snap-On and Actron.
Snap-On bought the old Sun Corporation years ago. You may recall that Sun was the dominant gauge manufacturer in the 60’s; long before Autometer became the market leader they are today. Snap-On retained the rights to the Sun Diagnostic equipment division used by professional mechanics and has expanded and refined the line since the acquisition. The connection between Snap-On and Actron is this; “Sunpro and Sun Super Tach are registered trademarks of, and used under exclusive license by Actron Manufacturing Company from, Snap-On Tools Company.” This makes sense because Snap-On is in the tool business not the aftermarket automotive gauge business. Snap-On has no financial interest in Actron, the actual manufacturer of Sun and Sunpro gauges. Actron is a privately owned company and Snap-On is a publicly traded company. This explains the fact that both companies have different CEO’s and corporate governance bodies. So, there we have it; a licensing agreement is what caused the misconception and confusion that Snap-On is the manufacturer of the Sun and Sunpro line of aftermarket automotive gauges.
