ignition help
Recently purchased a 72 c15 and have a key for the replacement door that was put on but the original ignition keys were lost and could not be found. I figure I will have to drill out my old ignition as I do not have a key to get the old one out unless some one has a really good suggestion for me!!! Where would you recommend getting a whole new ignition and door lock set from? I have found a couple places on line that have the kit for around the $30 range but just want to make sure I get a quality one or are they all the same? Got lucky with me 71 c10 super and it runs and drives great just needs some rust work, and now the 72 c15 is in even in better shape and I am praying it runs! ran when they parked it 6 years ago and lost the keys. I am into both now for under $500 together and may need help deciding when and what to do?!?! Will have to post up some picks later if I can find the time. Would really like to get an ignition and keys coming ASAP so I can see if the old girl runs. Hotwiring didn't go so well.

No need to drill out the old lock. Remove the interior panel and the door lock clip should be accessible from inside. With a flashlight you will be able to see how it's put together.

68gmsee that would work toget an original key off the old lock in the door but there is no code on the inner door lock. Just want to get my ignition out!

thanks for that Swamprat but already searched and found that one and tried it but I do not have the code on my lock. sent it to a lock smith and he just recommended drilling out the ignition. Not what I wanted to do but it will have to be I guess. Even tried some local guys keys in it and no luck. Where would you guys recommend ordering a new ignition and locks? Would like some feedback before I pull the trigger on the ones I found. Driving me nuts not starting the truck! I hope it at least turns over!! May have to get the big wrench out and hand turn to see

You can remove the ignition from the dash and replace it with a new one, or better yet go to the parts board and find the guys ( Teeitup, tll74 gdavis Dieselwrencher PICKMUP or specialtyretail ) that part out trucks and ask them for a complete lock and ign set.
EDIT, or just the IGN switch and then order a new lock set from a vender to install on the truck.

Drill the lock, and be done with it, or use a hammer and screw driver. You'll waste more time and money than the $8 cylinder costs brand new from GM.

Looked at lock docks posts and he has great info but I am going to have to go the Spokanistan rout with it just wish there was a video or picture to show how to do the drill or hammer method so I don't F it up. Just have to be careful and grow some patience I guess. What form or local vendor would be a good one to order my parts from? Since I have an oddball door already I am going to get both new door locks and ignition right off the bat. Was wondering if I drilled a couple small holes in the ignition just to try and locate the spring and use a screw driver to turn the ignition counter clockwise till it comes out or if I still need the damn original key to turn the ignition? I hate how damn easy this could be but how complicated it has become not having the damn key!

Which door has been replaced? If you want to send me the lock cylinder out of the original door I can make a key for it to see if it will work in the ignition. Shouldn't cost more than a couple of bucks to send it in a padded envelope. Drilling/big screwdriver/hammer is a crap shoot but it's your truck.. LockDoc

lock doc. Should have just contacted you to begin with instead of trying to have a friend of a friend help me with it. Only thing is I am not real sure that the lock I took out will help out as the ignition may have been messed with before. Looks like someone tried to wrench it off before so its a shot in the dark for the lock plus I would have to wait a damn week now to get my lock back from 100 miles away. I am all ears to what else you would suggest and or I can try and get that lock back and sent to you. If you don't mind pm me your address and I will try and get that to you unless someone can think of another way?

Got a new set of lock cylinders and keys from Wes at Classic Heartbeat, and a new ignition from Autozone. Disconnected the harness from the ignition in the truck, and then drilled out the cylinder, started with a small bit and worked my way up. Slid right out in about 10 minutes, put the new cylinder and ignition in and all was well. Very easy. The door locks were what gave me a headache, every single one of the bolts that held the panels on were stripped and rusted out. Posted via Mobile Device |

It was a combination of not knowing what I was doing, and getting various bits of advice on here. I cut it first, nothing happened, so I proceeded to drill it out.
Once I got everything apart, it made far more sense. It's kinda one of those things I had to take apart (read:completely destroy) to understand how it works and is assembled. Posted via Mobile Device |

we pulled the SS cover off the cylinder, unscrewed the bezel as far as it would go and stuck a big screw driver in the key hole. a few good whacks and that sucker came free. i ended up taking the switch apart, pulling the cylinder guts out and reassembling it all. now i can start it with a screw driver until i get my new locks in.
