What do you think about these drums?
A local garage wants $40.00 per drum to turn them. Another garage's turning machine is broken.
Is it worth it to try and turn these or just buy a new set? There is a heavy rust ring at the edge of the braking surface.

The rust ring is where the shoes don't ride not a problem. My local Napa told me they don't turn rotors anymore and tried to sell me a new pair for 85.00 each...LOL
I went to my local F*rd dealership, the only dealer we have in town. They did both for 40.00 I guess it will vary where you live on the price. In my highly populated town I thought that was a steal LOL |

where was that price at? they must be from overseas like everything else...LOL at least mine I think came from the US. they did say Bendix but you never know.

WOW, 40 dollars each to turn drums??? When I worked at Napa in the early 80's we charged $5.00 per drum. I still would not pay more than $10.00 per drum and the only way I would turn a new drum is if it was out of round.

Rockauto, $25ea. ALL drums you can buy today will be from China. Never had to turn a brand new one.

I pay 15 bucks around here to turn them and yes I have had to turn new drums and rotors many times. When I was the brake mechanic at our shop I just started to do it every time to save time and headaches. They were never really that bad But they were not perfect.
It was mostly one pass on very slow and then emery cloth to get that mirror like cross hatch. Wish I had that machine today cuz I don't think they do as good a job as I used to.

mike them first before you try to cut them...on real rusty ones by the time you cut through the pits they could be too thin...and the odds that a 40 year old drum has never been cut before aren't good....the friction material on new shoes is not as thick as it was 20 yrs ago,so by the time they conform to an oversize drum they're shot....so you spend most of their usable life stopping on 1/2 the shoe

No cutting needed when I got my new drums I think at 35. 45.00$ each. Yeh they were made over sea's and lighter with no cut out to ajust brakes. I don't know why they can't make them as good as originals ( well I think I know why ) let alone wish they make them here. Does someone know how to save Detroit or maybe create jobs Mr president. i'm running wider rear drums off an 85 van...they have the adjuster cutouts in the drum,not the backing plate...and the replacement drums have none

NAPA (at least the local store) does not turn drums. They suggested a shop and that shop will do it for $15 per drum.

The link brings up a drum with 5 lug bolt holes. That would be a problem.

I will mention because no one else has: there is no reason to automatically turn the drums just because they are off. If there is pitting from rust/ sitting or scoring from letting the shows wear out, yea, but orherwise you are just wasting money. Same goes for disc rotors, with addition of if you have pedal vibration due to warpage.
