power steering on a 65 chevy truck

I installed a front end out of an 83 chevy truck under my 65. I drove the 83 before I parted it out and the power steering worked fine. Now I cant get it to work on my 65 meaning no power steering. I replace the seal behind the rag joint and the two above the pitman arm, then replaced the high pressure hose. I started the truck today and filled the pump and drove the truck up the road and back. Once I got back I shut off the engine jacked up the front end and turned the tires from lock to lock and it blew fluid out of the pump and I could hear air hissing. SO I started the truck again and turned the tires from lock to lock still nothing. What am I missing?? There is no kinked hoses and I have them connected in the right place why wont it work??. Right before I came in for the night I topped off the pump again and tried it one more time and it blew fluid out again.

Blowing fluid out without the engine running is normal. Does the fluid level change from enigine running to engine off?

It blew fluid the last time with the engine running and no the fluid level did not change.

that seal you replaced behind the rag joint lies within a housing that contains 4 parts if those parts are not properly aligned and preloaded when re assembled you will have improper servo operation and either no power assist or the box will go full turn in one direction as soon as you start the engine...here are some exploded views hope this helps. this is for a series 800 box.

Must of done something wrong installing the seal. So I replaced the box with another one I had laying around today all I have to do is hook up the hoses then I will try it out and see if it works.

Changed the steering box that I used just the other day and it worked fine to my 65 thinking the box was my problem and still don't have power steering. I am at a loss. What is the problem???

I know this is a dumb question but sometimes we over look the obvious so I will ask it. Is your pump rotating in the same direction as the donor vehicle you took it out of? depending on placement of the pump it maybe rotating backwards compared to the how it was configured in the other truck. If the same, maybe a clogged hose or fitting. 2 boxes, same problem I would look to the pump.

Not a dumb question. I thought of the same thing but the engine and front end and pump and box all came out of the same donor truck. How many times should I turn the wheel lock to lock to get the system bled? Maybe I am not doing this enough. I know of my fords once you fill the pump and turn the wheels a couple of times it is good and ready to go.

i just did this and my steering box had so much air it took several lock to lock tries. i first did it with the engine off and the front wheels off the ground. I had my brother help me turn the wheel while i checked the fluid level. I had lots of air bubbles in the fluid. after all the air seemed to be out i did it with the engine running and that completely removed the remaining air. Good Luck

I came to think about one thing cuz I'm in pretty much the same situation (my power steering doesnt work either) when the front end is changed, there isn't any issues for the steering box to come to its ends?
That there is something else that blocks or hesitates the steering to max?

I will raise my front and see if there is any issues.. when time comes..

Did you buy a pressure hose for an '83 or for a '65? Shoulda been for an '83. If so, I'd be checking the hose for defect--I've seen new flex brake hoses that had NOT been drilled (by the manufacturer) on the caliper end; maybe a similar "forgot to do operation" on your new ps pressure hose.
