That's what I was going to say. 283 with Tuned Port fuel injection would be really cool. TPI was designed around a 305 so they have plenty of flow for a 283. Lots of low end torque. Couple that with a 700R4 with a deep first gear and you have a great combo.

Bear in mind todays V8 truck engines are 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 Liters so in cubic inches that's 292, 323, and 366. You can get a good bit of power from a small package with fuel injection. You don't have to have a dual carb 454 to make good power.

Re: veiws on using the 283?

by far the best budget engine build that made quite a bit of power that I've ever done was the 408 I had in my truck when I first built it. such an easy combo and can be done super cheap. basically what I did is found a sbc 400 cleaned up the cylinders, stock crank, stock 350 rods (5.7), ordered a cheap set of pistons, and had set of stockish 300hp heads (041 casting), decent sized cam, and aluminum intake. all in all I had a little over 1000 bucks in the whole motor and I'm fairly sure i was getting 1hp per cubic inch. super cheap, a ton of fun to drive, and very streetable
like it was said before there is no substitute for cubic inches!

Efficiency is a great substitute for displacement

i think you would spend more in the long run trying get more from less, plus stress out the block and rotating assembly, more Cubes means more power and a more stable base to build on.

a 350 cid at 300 HP is pretty cheap and common build
