Wiper motor Q's
My wiper motor gave up on me. It don't see it under the cowl, so I guess it is behind the dash- right? What is the easiest way to get to it, and do local parts houses usually carry this?
TIA

It is underneath the dash. Very easy job...i did mine a few weeks ago.
I picked up a rebuilt motor with a lifetime warranty from O'Reilly's for $45+$15 core charge. To change the motor, you need to remove the cowl. The cowl comes out with 4 bolts and about a dozen screws. Two of the bolts (1/2") are located at the front corners of the cowl, kinda by the hood hinge. The other two are in the door jamb. You have to open the door to remove them. Then the screws attach it at the lower part of the cowl, under the hood/cowl seal. There are other screws plainly visible on the top of the cowl. Once you get the fasteners off, remove the wiper arms and pull off the cowl. After the cowl is off, disconnect the wiper linkage at the wiper motor. The two arms come off the wiper arm with a simple clip, and the wiper arm comes off the motor with one nut. Then go inside and remove the motor. I had to lay down on the floormat. Disconnect the wiring going to the motor and with windshield washer pump, then remove the three screws holding the wiper motor in. They are loacated around the exterior. 2 of them can be removed really easy, but the third one you can't see, but it is still really easy to remove. Installation is the reverse of removal. It would be a good idea to replace the windshield washer pump if yours dosen't work, since it is attached to the wiper motor. Overall it is a very easy job....took me about an hour

Thanks for the detail, Lucas. I didn't know if the cowl needed to come off or not.

I went out and looked under the dash, and there is no access to where the wiper motor would be. Do I need to pull off the bezel, or what?

Pull your guage bezel off, it makes it alot eaiser than trying to do it from under the dash blind, at least this way you can see the wiper motor!!

Will do. I need to order the part today- should it be a 3 or 4 connector harness.

I'm not sure can you look at it before you have to order it? It may be the 4 connector plug on it.

Well, I dont really want to pull the bezel, then put it back if someone knows ahead of time. I mean since I have do drive it before the part will come in.

Like he said, you can get at it from underneath the dash, but taking off the dash bezel is alot easier getting at that motor. Just order the motor, i'm sure you'll have to pay the full price with no core but when it comes in then takes yours off, get your money back for your core return and put the new one on.

What I was trying to say is that there is a 4 and a 3 connector motor that can be ordered. I am curious if anyone knows which one my 71 uses so I can order the right one without having to remove the bezel to look see which one to order, then again to install it.
thanks again

Mine was a 3-connector. Look at the wiper motor....on the right side, where the wiring goes into it. It will have 3 wires or 4. My '72 had 3.
I forgot to ask if your truck is AC or not. If it is, i would imagine you would have a harder time, gettign around the ducting and such. Mine was really easy and i didn't need to pull the bezel or anything else....

Yup. They liked using the same part number when ever they could.
Althoguh, this is probably a timp that the camarow guys would be better of getting. Way more trucks in junk yards than 1st gen f cars. |
