hand safety uses punch/chisel holder

As I get older, my 'aim' deteriorates in MANY[ ] respects, including using center punches for drilling and chiseling, both on wood and metal. Started using a tool I had accumulated but never tried until lately. Man, what a skin and knuckle and bone saver!
I've enclosed a picture of one found on an i'net site: if you don't yet have one, I'd suggest it be a next-tool-purchased for your work-site.

the way most people hold a chisel is to grip it with a fist like grip.
a miss with the hammer will hit a knuckle every time.
i was taught to hold a chisel the reverse of that, so that your thumb is pointed down.
it is a little awkward to hold a chisel that way, but if when you miss with the hammer you hit your palm.
still hurts, but nothing gets broken or bleeds

Good idea Ogre, have to try it.
I was taught to hold with my fingertips, driving steel pins with a sledge. If I miss, my hand may be bruised, but functional. I kinda adapted this for wood and steel chisels also. After a couple crescent shaped bruises, I learned. (and sometimes still remind myself).

I just use a vice grip to hold the chisel/punch. It's even safer if you have a buddy hold it while you swing away
