383 stroker?
any one ever build one. what does it take? I know you start with a 350 block and bore it out .030 but it is the crank and rods that confuse me. any one want to walk me threw this. I have built many motors and have never tackled a stroker. what do you have to do to the block other than that?
any help would be app. i did a search on line but every one wants to sell you a kit thanks Darren by the way i bought this kit stroker kit

do you have a 86-95 engine? thats what that kit is for. i think the better kits all you have to do is stick the stuff in there and not take it somewhere to get put in and get it machined and all that crap. actually i dont know much. never built an engine but want a 383 in my truck.... i know the increase in the stroke of the crank makes the bigger cubic inches and you have to buy 383 stroker rods and pistons.

the 383 uses a 3.75 strock from either a 400 crank with cut down main journals or a after market crank. you need to use the right crank for your year motor. do you have a one piece rear main seal or a 2 piece? makes a difference. as far as modifications, you need to notch the pan rails to clear the rods. also, if you use the shorter 400 rods, you don`t have to worrie about cam to rod clearance but if you use the 350 rods, most likely you`ll need to modify the rod blodt for clearance. most machine shops can do both modifications for you.

350 block + 3.75 stroke( stroke from a sb 400) + 4.030 bore=383
are those pistons are for a 5.7 or 6 inch rod hopefully they are one or the other. I personally prefer the 5.7 becuase the piston pin isn't up in the oil ring landing. 6 isn't bad either usaully the bigger the rod stroke ratio the revier the motor is. plus it lasts longer. the 5.565 inch rod from the factory....isn't that great, they have a reputation for wearing your motor out fast, being noisey, and costing you power, due to the excessive side thrust load the rods put on the pistons. as 68c10owner stated, you gotta do some clearance stuff as far as pan rails. and like he said you gotta grind the corners of the rods to clear the cam, unless that is a small base circle cam, or you get a small base circle cam. one last thing with the one piece rear main seal you will want to get a 158 tooth flexplate/flywheel not the old style 168. I almost built a 383 until i found a great deal on a 400 block good luck --Scott |

all the magizines performance magizines sites are good i.e.
superchevy, chevyhiperformance, car craft, hot rod. those are the best, but you really get down to the core of by calling up companies that make this stuff: scat crankshafts, eagle, lunati and so on. --Scott |

I built a 383 for my Monte, forged scat crank, forged rods, Kieth black 9.7:1 pistons, had quitr a bit of machining done to the block, nice comp cam, double roller timing chain, 202's ported and polished, the 350 had 300 horse stock, not sure what it will be pushing now, as the motor is just sitting in my frame and hasn't even been fired up yet

Don't forget that you'll need the 400's balancer, too.
