72 crossmember
Has anyone flipped the trailing arm mounts to get the correct pinion angle after a 4.5/5 drop.

Yes, people have flipped them. It's not really necessary w/just a 5" drop.

Ok if its not necessary to flip the brackets what is the needed pinion angle to have so the u joints don't bind. I know I will hear them if they are binding but I want to get it right before driving it at all

I had a swb 68 w/bags (no mounting brackets) & 1.5" blocks which equalled approx 8" of rear drop & had no u-joint issues. I also didn't have an OD trans so it's possible it might be more noticed with one.

Ok that sounds good like I won't have to make any changes. Although I have already taken the brackets off reattaching them with grade 8 bolts will be easy and if a issue arises it will be easy to fix. Thanks

I did forget to mention I have 72 lwb if that makes any difference with the 2 piece driveshaft

It's possible w/the 2pc as mine was a swb w/1pc shaft. Try it as it came 1st. If it feels shaky, flip them & see if you feel improvement.

My ol 72 long bed had a 7 inch rear drop with a 2 peice drive shaft and I didnt have any binding issues. I did go through carrier bearing about once every 18months so if there were any pinion issues the carrier bearing paid the price but I never noticed anything odd until my bearing would let lose and when that happens it will scare the crap out of you...lol
On my bagged 68 I did flip the carrier bearing mount 180degrees and re mounted to get a better pinion angle. If you go this route its not to bad and only takes a few hrs with my cave man tools |
