6 lug to 5 lug rear end ?

I have a '71 5 lug open rear end and a '69 6 lug posi rear end. I am wanting to stay with the 5 lug can I just swap the axles from my '71 to the '69 or will it be easier to swap the posi and gears from th '69 to the '71 rear? If I swap the complete posi and gears will I need to reset up the gears?

I have asked this same question and was told the axles are different length. I don't know for sure as I never tried.

The axle lengths ARE different, and, yes if you swap the posi to the newer housing, the rear end will have to be "set up". You do have a few other options, though. You could have a machine shop re-drill the 6 lug flanges to 5 lug, or, buy replacement axles from an aftermarket producer. As hard as it is to find 12 bolt posi units, I wish I had your problem. Good luck.

Lately it almost seems easier to find nice wheels for six lug axles.
