Yes, your balancer will work, but you will need to use the 305 timing cover since the pointer is at 12:00. As long as the flexplate is from a 85 down engine, it will work. 86 up went to the one piece seal and was different bolt pattern.

Everything from the 305 will bolt on. But forget the heads, even though they will bolt on, the valves are too small and the chambers too small. Besides, a 305 head is the worst designed head GM ever made.

I would think that the 350 would need the bigger balancer to counteract the greater vibration from the larger rotating assembly.

Personally, yes, I prefer an 8" balancer on 350's. But, it has nothing to do with vibration. If your engine vibrates, a balancer, or as the proper term goes, harmonic dampener, will not stop it. All the dampener does is like it says, dampen harmonics. It really doesn't matter what size, as long as it is used to balance the assembly.

I seriously doubt the assembly will be truely balanced anyway. Not for 700 bucks. A true balancing job is where they weigh each component to find the lightest one, and then remove weight off of the others to make them weigh the same. Every piston and rod needs to be weighed and matched. This is the only way to balance an internally balanced engine.

why not spend the extra money on a new high quality balancer as protection on your brand new rotating assembly?

I had to buy a new flexplate for the exact reason that swervin mentioned and it was only like 25 bucks.

I bought a flexplate for my truck for like $25 a few years ago.

I would strongly reccomend replacing it...it is so cheap and easy to put on while the motor is out, and will give you hell to replace it if your ring gear gets a bit worn in the future.

I go through enough trannies towing my tractor around all year that it shouldn't be too much trouble to replace it when it does go.

Well so far I have killed one 700 and one 350 in four years. This is in a 1/2 ton truck puling an 18' trailer and john deere 855 about 4500 lbs total and I do have a remote cooler for the tranny. I'll just go to the boneyard and get another for 100 and throw it in and it should last me another couple years. Thats why I bought the 67. Now I have a sm420 and 4.10 in the rear.
