Dual fuel tanks, returning fuel to wrong tank?
So, when my selector is on my driver's side tank, the truck runs just fine... but it seems as though the return line takes the fuel back to the passenger tank.
At first I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. But with the passenger tank empty, I tried to confirm my thoughts, and sure enough when the driver's tank was empty, I switched over to the previously empty passenger tank only to find 3/4 of a tank of gas.... I'm thoroughly confused. Do I have a plugged return line, a faulty selector valve, or what? See signature for truck specs. I put up another thread in the engine/drivetrain section but it wasn't getting much traffic. Thanks in advance guys/gals!

I would bet on a defective valve. It should be easy enough to change.

Try cycling the valve back and forth a few times. I replaced the old screw type selector valve with a newer solenoid style and for some reason it got stuck in what seemed like the middle of both tanks and the truck wouldn't start. Cycled the valve and it fired right back up.

Re: Dual fuel tanks, returning fuel to wrong tank?
Thanks a lot for the quick feedback guys. I'll swing by the local parts store and pick one up on the way home to see if it solves my issue. I appreciate it. I'll be sure to report back before the weekend and let you guys know how it turned out.... although it may be after the weekend before I get to run enough gas through it to see if it's actually resolved.
Thanks again.

yeah, if you haven't messed with any of the plumbing. It's definitely the selector valve

Re: Dual fuel tanks, returning fuel to wrong tank?
Yup, it's all factory. The only line I ran would have been removing a old plastic line from the fuel pump to the inlet on the carb, but the truck has functioned fine since putting in the hard line. Thanks for the reply man. I appreciate it.

Re: Dual fuel tanks, returning fuel to wrong tank?
you guys were right, it was the selector valve. I absolutely cannot believe how packed in there that thing is. Tested my patience, but she's fixed. Glad to be able to put 40 gallons in her again. Thing passes everything but a gas station with one tank...

Replacement unit though, the vent lines were a different diameter. Like the original was 1/4" and the replacement was 5/16". Made it tougher to put back in. Did you notice the same thing?

Re: Dual fuel tanks, returning fuel to wrong tank?
Yup. I sure did. I only spent a few moments on that before I took the old rubber lines off and replaced them with the next size up hose. I just made sure I really tightened the clamps down on the fuel lines. No leaks and felt good to know the rubber was new and not older than me.

Re: Dual fuel tanks, returning fuel to wrong tank?
Where did you get your replacement valve and do you have a part number?
Thanks,
