Thanks man following your build pics to guide me. Dumb question but when you put parts back on that were spot welded. Do you just drill holes in the new part to spot weld?

Thanks T.J. Found out today my FIL owned this truck twice. This is the first time he owned in the early 70's.

Got about 6.5 hours in today while the girls where cookin'.

I patched the two big holes in the hump. The one on the side didn't turn out to well may cut it back out and start over. The patch metal is two thin and keeps blowing out when I try to weld it up.





Took the fender and door off.


Drilled a hole in each hinge to help me line it back up.


Took off the rocker. Looks like a need a front pillar.


I'm on vacation this next week hope to get a lot done on the truck.

Dove in and cut the Driver floor out!

Stripped the front end off. Everything on the front is in good shape except the wiring. All I have to do is blast and paint it.







The dash is almost ready for paint.




Tomorrow I plan to strip the bed off. Have 2 more nice days here in CTX before a cool front blows in.

Nice start, the rust does not look to bad, mines worse for sure. I hope to start back on mine after the holidays...

Great progress on the metal work. I'll be doing the same in the spring. I'm interested to see how your Top Banana parts will fit. They make nice parts. Also...I did my steering wheel also. I used JB weld to fill in the cracks after sanding and haven't had any issues yet on the repair.

Its really not that bad. I have see a lot worse on this forum so hopefully I can get it all welded back in right.

Thank you. This is my first time at metal work on an auto body and welding. I am woodworker so this is all kinda of the darkside. I read your post on the steering wheel repair. Will tackle that once my vacation is over.

Its funny you mention the parts I was test fitting all of the driver's side this morning. I ran into some problems. The first is the front hole in the floorboard section does not line up with the kick panel and the bottom fender bracket hole. Its off by a lot. Even when you have the parts off the truck the holes don't even come close to lining up.


I got the holes in the front brace to lineup and this is what is important. I can re drill the hole in the floorboard.


I also have a big gap between the floorboard patch and the firewall. I think I can pull this together and then fill it with weld.


The other problem I see is the kick panel does not fit good against the A-pillar where it has the idention on the inside. The A pillar has a curve to it. I am replacing the A-pillar but I have not ordered it yet so I will wait until I get it before I do any welding. Hopefully the kick panel will fit better with the aftermarket A-pillar.


I know these parts aren't perfect to the original but it looks like I can make them all work right. You see my oops on the right of the picture. Even after careful measuring I cutout too much there in the front.

I had planned on pulling the bed today but after fighting with the step and fender on the driver's side for 2 hours I called an early day. I had to cut nearly every bolt off. After 5 straight days working on her my body has finally given out. Hope to get back on it on Friday. We are having some pretty cold temps come in so that will help cool it down some.

Next time drill the heads off the rear fenders bolts from inside the bed....turns it into a 20 min project. The metal work looks great and the panels fit far better than the stuff from LMC and the rest of those vendors. Keep up the progress and posts.

I also cleaned the cab corner and only have 3 really small holes I can weld up.


One other thing 1963 C-10. I cutoff the floor patch right at the start of the back pillar. I didn't want to take any of this loose.

Thanks for the tip. I did grind the heads off from the inside. Most of the step bolts I had to cut with a cutoff wheel. The where suppose to be carriage type bolts but everyone of them spun.

I think I stripped the whole front end in the same time as the step and fender. LOL!

I have an air ratchet but my big compressor kicked the bucket and my backup one is a small Sears one that can bearly run any power tools. I asked Santa for a 3 hp single stage. Hopefully I have been good enough.

Your truck is comming along nice. Good work on the metal and welding. Before you know it you will be done. I cant wait for the bed to be off. Are you going to use POR 15 or rustoleum? Did you decide to work the bed first or last? I will be home In Jan, so if you need some help on something wait and I can help you. Like cutting the bed wood or body work! Good job!

Nice work on fitting the sheet metal. I just did some first time welding on mine and had a lot of fun, You get much better at it really fast, Since then I've repaired some lawn furniture, a lamp and our pull out bed. , I like where you go on "vacation"

Thanks John WhippinSaw. Hopefully it will resemble what it looked like from the factory when I get done with it. I always stay at home and do projects on my vacations. Going places on vacation stresses me out! LOL.

I didn't get anything done on the truck today. But I have a good excuse. They wife told me last night we had to be at the in laws today(where the big garage is) from 9a-5p. She was expecting a delivery and it was to heavy for her to deal with.

Hmmm. An early Xmas present to me from my Mother in law. She is awesome!

I kinda of knew what it was so I spent the morning cleaning up the southwest corner of the garage and running some wiring for said item. I went ahead an insulated the corner too.







I broke it in but didn't have the right fittings to hook it up. Made a trip to Lowes on the way home to get the fitting I needed. While I was there found a vibration pad kit on clearance for $7.

Look forward to using it tomorrow. Should keep up with my sandblaster quite well. Next thing on the list is to build a sandblasting cabinet. I found some really cool plans here.

That's a game changer in any garage, very nice mother in law. Light bulb went on when you mentioned a vibration pad, maybe that will stop mine from walking around in the garage.

Nice Christmas present. That will definitly make a difference. The one I got recently isn't quite as beefy as that one and I can run my bead blast cabinet and never have to stop and wait for air. You're going to love it.

Thanks guys. The air compressor is definitely save my arms. I used it to disassemble the whole bed and it came on once and shutoff while I was using my air ratchet! Awesome.

Between last night and this morning got the bed off, headers off, starter, exhaust, and drained the radiator. Looks like I will be able to just blast the headers. Which I am happy with because they fit very well. Although PO had the speedo cable and the brake line laying against the driver header. I don't know how the speedo even worked. Maybe that's why it read slow.









That's it for awhile vacation ends today.

Yes sir. I want to finish all the floorboards and rockers before I remove the cab. Need to get a engine hoist so I can pull the engine and trans and then the cab.

I agrees with that but he did take out the last crossmember to mount the cheap plastic fuel cell.

I worked on the driver door today. I wasn't planning on replacing the whole skin but looks like I might have too. It appears the was a dent put in the front right below the belt line. All of the undercoating is knocked off in this area and the metal is kinda spongy. It had about a 1/4" of bondo on it. Along with the lower repair. I am also going to need the bottom for the inside. Not looking forward to repairing this.

Well, you might consider finding a donor door instead....may cost more but it will be easier if you don't like body work....what I would do anyhow. Not that I don't "Like" body work....just plain don't know how ta do it! lol!

My doors are in similar shape. I would suggest skinning the whole front. Much less chance of warping and it's not that much more for a full skin.
