I'm putting the finishing touches on my engine. I've seen some pulleys that were powder coated, but the grooves were coated, too. Will the belts slip or will the powder coating peel as a result of friction caused by the belt?

As another option look into zinc phosphate coating (Parkerizing)...there may be a plating company in your area that does this and I believe this is how the pulleys left GM

I've never been that impressed with powder coating. Chips too easy. I would just use a good quality rattle can with high solids. Easy to repair if needed, cheap, and you can do it yourself and get nice results. Of coarse if you have access to some urethane paint that would be even better.

Powder coat! It looks better, lasts longer and will not cause your belts to slip. I have over 15K miles on my truck, all of the pulley's (except idlers with fixed bearings) are powder coated and show no signs of wear. If you attempt to coat the idlers the lubricant in the sealed bearings will bake out before the powder cures.
