A833 MOPAR to chevy question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Instead of asking in Keith's Intro thread I thought I would start this thread.

My plan is to swap this into my 250 6cyl 1974 stepper that currently has the Saginaw 3spd.

I've read a bunch of the archives( maybe not enough) and still have a couple of questions

1. A833 MOPAR will fit using Chevy bell housing correct?

2. Will my Saginaw bell housing work? Or does it need to be the 80-87 A833 bell?

I ask because I can get a Mopar a833 locally. Thanks for the help!

I don't know a lot about the conversion, since my truck came that way.

1) Sounds like you have to have either a MOPAR case or a GM case to fit the desired bellhousing.

From the article: "Chevy offered this as a COPO option on 1/2-ton trucks from '81-87, known as MY-6. There are two versions of the Chevy case: the first has the regular GM mounting ears to the bellhousing, while the second retains the Chrysler mounting pattern and requires the specific factory aluminum bellhousing. We have one with a boss for a hydraulic clutch slave, and we've seen a picture of one with a Z-bar ball stud on the side. It looks to us like Chevrolet simply modified an existing mold for the bellhousing-silver plastic push-in plugs fill the unused Chevy mounting holes. "

2) I just noticed an error in the article. They referred to the trans as a "COPO" (Central Office Production Option), which is not correct. It was a regular ole' production option (RPO MY6), just like the Saginaw (M62 or M64).

So what about fitting a NON overdrive a833 in behind a Chevy. These boxes are probably one of the stoutest 4spds ever made and were fine behind wheel standing hemisphere back in the day.

All my searches lead to the overdrive version and nothing for the regular 4spd.

Is the A833 like the SM465 or completely different? Curious cause this is the first time I've heard of it.

It's way different. The sm465 is a dump truck transmission. Bigger heavier and hard to shift.

Look up the a833. Lots of info online.

I got the 833 behind a 6.2 in my 82.Nice combo,really nice shifting trans.Lot shorter throws than my 465 trucks too!!

Input shafts are different Chevy to Mopar, as are output shafts.

It may take some searching but there is a pretty decent thread on here about these. Somewhere. A couple of years ago.
