I know the front axle is normally wider than the rear. My 69 has been upgraded to a later (72 I think) front axle with disc brakes. Is there a width difference? Maybe it is because of the wide rims and tires but my truck looks like the front is a couple inches wider in front on each side.

Sounds normal. They vary very little,if at all. Figure,they came with the same wheels and mounted under the same truck. They are all Dana44s.

If you went to a 71 and newer rear end, that is wider than the 69 rear.
