Sand Blasting ??

Is it me or is $350.00 to much to pay to have a frame blasted? Seems awfully high...

It does to me. About double what I find around my area. $150-$200 depends on type of material they use. Most all use soda blasting slightly higher than sand due to material cost.

I'm not sure on prices these days but about 10 years ago I asked about sandblasting the bed on my truck and the man said $500. I told him no thanks.

To be on the safe side, I'd check around locally at body shops to see if they know or recommend someone you can get quotes from.

I looked at a rental trailer commercial mounted blaster was near what they are asking.

I have found that if your parts are covered in greasy grime, your bill will be twice that of the guy that brings in a dry dirty/rusty part.

I talked to a local shop here that does all my big stuff, and he confirmed that prices will double sometimes triple. Since the media is contaminated after blasting greasy parts, and he has to basically dispose of it so your double/triple price is because you are buying the media.

You may try asking the shop why they are quoting you that price, you may find that he is charging extra for the contamination factor.

i wouldnt think they would use soda on a frame anyway. heck you can buy a pot blaster for $100 more or less. and a guy told me that if you have any access to river sand and sift it thru some hardware cloth to clean a little it works great. havent tried it yet. and i sure never told you to remove any sand from the levee.

im sure thats true. plus it takes a lot longer with greasy grime. sandblaster isnt as effective on soft stuff. ought to pressure wash the crap out of is first.

I paid 150, I've heard 100-400 from local shops. It frustrates me they "say" they charge by the hour "no job to big or too small" bs they charge by the job. Local shop charges 90/hr. if it takes you more then an hour to blast a frame you wouldn't be in business.

I called BS too, I found a company that will do it for 125 minus driving gear, and 200 with.

I think I'd try to remove all the undercoating I could myself with a wire wheel and (I heard this works on undercoat) diesel. Citrus might work on undercoating too since it works on rubber (dissolves it). That way sandblasting should be cheaper.

I paid $100.00 for four chevy truck rally rims , fronts backs and insides sand blasted than powder coated , all sides $100.00 plus clear powder coated again all sides $100.00. $300.00 total. Not sure if that's a good price I did not look around , it was a father & son shop all done at the in there shop , they were reccommaned by a few people , rims came out nice.

The local shop here quoted me $600 to do my frame with all the driveline removed. Guess I'll be using my cheapo blast from a bucket sandblaster and buy many bags of sand from Home Depot.

That's high. Sandblasting AND powdercoat cost me $400.00.

For cleaning the frame prior to blasting a trip to the dollar store for a can or two of the cheapest oven cleaner followed by use of a pressure washer will rid 95% of the grease build up. Makes a mess but accomplishes the job.

That seems high to me. I paid $200 for the frame, trailing arms, rear end, and a few other small pieces to be sand blasted.

I rented a a commercial sand blaster for $125 for the whole day, borrowed a sullair pull behind diesel air compressor from my work (could have rented one for $125.00) and bought 600 lbs of recycled crushed glass for $75.00 and made one hell of a mess, but got all of the chassis and some other parts stripped for about $250 including the fuel for the compressor. might be worth looking into, plus recycled crushed glass is safer to use, no silicosis possibility, but I'd still wear the protective suit that should come with the blaster.

Guy around here told me he could probably sandblast and powdercoat mine between 4-6.....but they are a realy big company so he is probably able to do it cheaper than smaller companies

$600.00 to blast a frame ? I'd be willing to bet that includes an epoxy primer ? A cheapo blaster and materials are less than $200.00 providing you have the compressor to run it ,and if you don't what are you going to spray epoxy primer on the freshly blasted metal with ? buy the sand blaster do it yourself and when done sell the blaster on craigslist for $50.00 less than you paid for it and recoup your money .

that's exactly what I said when the local blasters told me the figure they wanted.......I know the economy sucks but geez......don't kill the customer's!!!! Besides, you will have the satisfaction of knowing it will be done to your liking, and you won't get nickle and dime'd for every little piece.

I just picked up a new compressor that will allow for better sandblasting on larger things. I may do a combination of wire brushing the larger flatter areas and sandblasting the nooks and crannies. From there maybe I'll allow the blasted areas to flash rust and use POR 15 on the whole thing.

Just wish it would warm up so I can get started!

I know this is an old thread,but I need to jump in.My company has a sandblaster,and I have personally blasted several frames (1928 up to 1996)and bodies and anything you can think of,let me tell you it is not easy.I just blasted my 69frame and pieces (every thing swing arms backing plates everything)It took me 7 loads ,thats 45 minutes of blasting per load and 20 to 25 minutes to sweep and reload pot.That's about 8 hours total,and then 4 hours of priming and 4 hours of painting,now we're at 16 hours ,even at $45.00 per hour that's over $700.00 dollars,plus primer and paint.
So go on out and buy a little 10lb pot blaster and your 20hp compressor and let me know how long it will take,I would be willing to bet anyone who has done that will say I'M NEVER GOING TO DO THAT AGAIN!!!
Sorry for the rant,I just had to get that off my mind.
PS.I've got a frame coming in next week for blasting only,I told him $350.00 to $400.00 minimum,he was happy.
