When was the Earliest Super offered???

Some one educate me.. i have an original brochure dated "january 1971" and it is showing the only options were "custom", "custom deluxe" and "cheyenne". the z84 Custom Sport Truck was an option, but no "ye9" super offering. was the "super" a mid year in 1971?

Re: When was the Earliest Super offered???

1970 was the last year for the CST I do believe...

The Super was an option in 71 & 72 ...

The Catalogs and Brochures were not always up to date.

I will let other chime in.

I turned my computer sideways, it's ok Joe...

I have a May 71 production super, April sounds about right for intro - it was a mid-year introduction.

Re: When was the Earliest Super offered???

Jocko,
What range of sequential production number is mid-May? I have a 71 Super with a VIN of CE141A637xxx that I don't have any documentation on yet. It does list the YE9 code on the SPID. Thanks for the help.

Re: When was the Earliest Super offered???

The first "Super" was 1967,a GMC "Super Custom". GMC built Super Customs throughout the 67-72 range. The first "Cheyenne Super" was late '71,as mentioned

Re: When was the Earliest Super offered???

Mid-April is my understanding for release of the YE9 Cheyenne Super trim package. The introduction brochure was a two page, four sides dated March/71. The change and price are shown as pending in the March 15, 1971 data book revision.

Jocko's truck is a Fremont truck so the sequence number will have no bearing on your Atlanta built truck. However if the SPID is original you have a Cheyenne Super. Dating it can be more difficult. Might try looking at the block, transmission and rear end date codes to get a window.

Re: When was the Earliest Super offered???

I've seen a few '71 Cheyenne Supers with SPIDS that show Z84 Cheyenne (or maybe CST). Just saw one at a junk yard last fall. Very original with chrome tailgate handle and all. I know there are discrepancies on SPIDs,but this was likely a result of the transition. I've seen a lot of descriptions listed wrong, but the code was right. This code was wrong

Hi special-K. I'm not sure I follow your last post. Are you referring to the SPID I posted?

No,I was referring to a truck I saw last fall, and others prior. By their SPID they were Z84 Cheyenne/CSTs,yet they obviously were YE9 Cheyenne Supers. Your SPID shows both,at least. It's like your SPID is saying you have a Cheyenne with the Cheyenne Super option. Strange, yet ultimately accurate. In '71 it was common to see CST on the SPID when those had been stopped in '70 and Cheyenne took their place. They both have the same code and that's what matters.
GMC Sierra Grandes are the equivalent to a Cheyenne Super in 71/72. But,those started in late-69. Not until '71 were the Sierra Grandes an individual option. Like your SPID reads, they would have been a Super Custom with the Sierra Grande option

Ah, that makes sense. I would love to have a 71 or 72 Sierra Grande. I've owned many chevy's but never one of the older GMC's.

Re: When was the Earliest Super offered???

My '71 shows the "Z84" option but doesn't show the YE9 code. It has a lot of the options of the CS trucks and has the fender badges for Cheyenne Super. Now all this talk has me wondering.

Re: When was the Earliest Super offered???

Jim has the truck been painted ? There are some things specific to supers and the rest are just options that could be had on any truck. The biggest are the glove box and dash appliqués, the chrome tailgate handle (71 only, 72 had a stainless cover) and the houndstooth bench in either parchment, blue or green. Any other color bench was not an option and houndstooth was specific to the super option. There were other parts that came with the package but those are the "upgrades" over the regular Cheyenne option. Also bx2 the upper molding was standard for supers, optional on Cheyenne.

Re: When was the Earliest Super offered???

When I bought the truck, the seat had been recovered with a custom made cover. It has the "Cheyenne Super" on the glove box door and fenders. It has the upper and lower trim. It was repainted once from what I can tell since I am in the middle of stripping paint. It has the tailgate band with the wood decal and the paint separator trim above but no chrome handle. The door panels and headliner are the scrolled type and the gastank had the factory carpet cover over it. I've come to wonder if my truck was a special order for the original owner because in another post, I showed a pic of the number "215" stamped in my cowel panel. Once I got it all apart, I found the number "215" written on the bed header panel, the gas tank and on top of the transfer case. These trucks always keep us wondering don't they?

Re: When was the Earliest Super offered???

Jim, Here is a thread that will explain your 215 numbers. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=591402
Do the super emblems look original? Or could they be reproductions.
