10 bolt question

Hi all,
I am wanting to get a locker for my 10 bolt rear end but don't know what size 10 bolt I have. How do I tell if I have an 8.5 or an 8.6? The 10 bolt came off a 1985 suburban.

Thanks for any help!

Re: 10 bolt question

Yours is a 8.5 The 8.6 is a later version of the ten bolt that gm is currently using. You should have a 8.5. The 8.6 has larger bearings for the carrier and 30spline axles. It is possible to upgrade an 8.5 to an 8.6 with special bearings and larger spline aftermarket axles.

I did this to my truck by getting the 8.6 Detroit true trac and getting 30 spline axles from a 90s silverado. My truck is 5 lug so it wasn't hard and I can get stronger aftermarket axles later as needed. Technically if your truck is 6 bolt I think later 6 bolt axles may fit that have the larger splines and you can do this as well but I'm not 100% certain
