Shift Arm "keeper pin"

My 72 has an factory auto tilt column and for the longest time my shift arm has been loose. Combination of the arm just being worn and the pin not fitting tightly any longer. Classic Industries has a new shorter shifter arm I ordered and hoped it would've come with a new interference fit type pin.....it didn't. Anybody know where to get one?

I found one at the dealer but it was a little long.

You could use a roll pin or try peening the one you have so it mushrooms slightly at the end, tightening it up when it's put back in place.

It's called a ' Roll Pin ' and once the pot metal housing gets worn , there's no roll pin that'll stay in place .

Several ways to easily fix this :

Slip a narrow cotter pin through it , the head of the cotter pin holes the rol pin from working out .

I like to use small cap screws that have a non threaded part up near the head , plus a nylock nut on the bottom ~ simple and effective , not obtrusive .

Can you drill it out and install a slightly larger roll pin?

Here is a picture of the stock pin. It is solid steel, like a mini hinge pin.

Yes *but* the thing you're drilling out is pot metal and prone to fracture .

What year did they change from roll pins to that other , better (IMO) typ of pin ? .

I remember the roll pins backing 1/2 way out on two year old Chevys back in the 1960's , it's always been a problem .

Not sure when the solid pin started. Most 67-72 trucks I've seen have them, but I've also seen roll pins too, and just assumed someone used it to try and fix the problem the op is having. It does seem to be a common problem with the pot metal.

Thanks for the input guys. leddzepp posted the pic of what I have....the solid one. May have to try the roll-pin idea.

What size roll-pin?

...or may try VWnate's idea of using a cap type screw.......I'm just anal on appearances and want it to look right.
