Odd question but, where do your techs get their training? Is there a school that most attend or just apprenticeships?

Even if someone graduates a trade school like Wyotech, it doesn't guarantee that they are going to be a skilled hand. We've had the best luck hiring guys that are already skilled craftsmen, and then teaching them how we want things done. Usually it results in a great collaboration of old experience and new ideas. |

Thanks. You guys have a proven standard of quality in your products and builds that I've seen. I've been looking into tech schools foryself such as Wyotech like you said and HRI, just to be able to get my foot in the door to this field. You guys have are great. Thank you!

Re: Goodguys 2015 Giveaway C10 by Scott's Hotrods
Here are some pointers on doing sheetmetal work if you want your work to be metal finished.
1.Your panel you have made needs to have the correct the shape and has to have a very tight fitment. 2.When you are welding sheetmetal it is best to use a tig welder if you want to be able to work the area after it has been welded. 3.With a Tig welder your metal can stretch and shrink very easy. When you want to work the area as in doing some hammer and dolly work.Your welds will not crack 4.With a Mig welder you have a better chance on destroying the area you are working on.When you want to take a hammer and dolly to the area you have welded with a Mig.You have a better chance on cracking the area We Tig weld our sheetmetal work we do on our builds we do here in house. We weld in 1 inch sections at a time. Then we cool the area with AIR not water. This is done on the entire area and this will be sanded down and metal finish. If there is any hammer and dolly work that needs to be done it can be done working the metal very good One more thing to add you need to have Patients when doing sheetmetal work Justin Last edited by Scottshotrods; 01-21-2014 at 03:53 PM. Re: Goodguys 2015 Giveaway C10 by Scott's Hotrods
Like skinning a cat I would imagine. Must be a million ways to do it.
Everyone of our guys has their own technique. Personally, I like to use my air nozzle a lot. Have the entire piece of work stitched, and only weld short runs at a time. Welder in one had, air nozzle in the other. After each weld, I cool it as fast as I can with air. Like I said though, everyone has their own method of doing things. Justin gave probably the best pointers on how to do it best. |

Re: Goodguys 2015 Giveaway C10 by Scott's Hotrods
The truck is in between a few other projects so getting a decent side shot is tough until I can roll it forward. Here's a couple shots of the bed on though.
It's still in pieces. We had to take at all apart in order to raise the floor up and still preserve the stock wheel wells. Rather than make new ones, we'll widen the stock ones so it has a somewhat factory look. Just for reference, the wheels that are on there are just for mock up. The new ones will have the correct backspacing and width so they sit a lot further out. THe ones on there now look silly... |
