factory hole in door??

Today I replaced the front driver and front passenger window motors in my 89 crew cab dually and the passenger window motor in my 87. All three doors had a hole in the upper middle of the door in the outer skin. It appeared to have been filled with some sort of epoxy. I was curious as to why these holes were there and what they were used for, before being filled? Any ideas??

Re: factory hole in door??

These doors were only drilled at the factory for fitting of the mirrors and nothing else

When you get a NOS door there are no holes.

NOS doors have no mirror holes but do have the holes for the outside door handle and key lock.

Re: factory hole in door??

send a picture if possible of the door... sometimes if the truck or the door itself had a prior life in the government or some commercial services it could have been a hole to accommodate an antenna wire or mount for an antenna, but most of the time those were covered with a rubber plug. If the door had that kind of use and was replaced by an auto body shop at some point, I could see the hole being bonded if it was a half done right job

Re: factory hole in door??

I think it is to far back and to low to be for mirrors? The hole your looking thru is the hole used to remove the window regulator out of.

Re: factory hole in door??

I thought it might be a hole for a mirror too, but it looked like it was to far back on the door and either to low for the top mount and to hi for a lower mount.

When I said all three doors, I meant driver & passenger on my 89 and the passenger door on my 87.

Re: factory hole in door??

Ok, so I just went and tore the door apart. There are no other holes besides the patched hole in question and the holes holding the current mirror (dumbo style). See additional pics. So if there are no more patched holes it wouldnt be West Coast or towing mirrors, right? Any ideas??
