Wow, what year would you guess? At any rate its a great peek into the factory. I am super impressed by the picture quality. Also actually impressed at some of the engineering controls in place. The two button actuators on the big presses. The assisted lift devices on the one man mobile rivet machines.

Their building 36 Chryslers, I've got a 38... might have be built in the same factory ... cool.. I know when I was stripping the layers of paint off of it. (like 10 different colors) some put on with a brush. I was wishing it could talk.... the things that car had seen, and places it had been.

Incredible engineering and to assemble and make work! look ma! no computers! I'm impressed with the large presses which made formed the sheet metal!

I wonder how many fingers or hands were lost! Getting into the monotonous repetitious movements would probably make for daydreaming~ thus accidents!

So I was cruising through a book about small block chevy's today, and I came across these pictures.
That first one is what i think is the most amazing. The caption says, "Shown bolted into a truck chassis, this early V8 casting was created in may 1953. Eagle eyes might notice the "dummy" stamping on the left cylinder head-these heads contained no internal passages."

So that's one of the first small blocks ever built, and the guys on this forum will recognize the cab, it's an AD!!
I think it's ironic, because I've heard on this forum quite a few times, "people put SBC's in these so much, you'd think it came from the factory that way." And this shows that it didn't go without thought! Not to mention we know who were the first people to do this conversion to one of our trucks.
The other two are the castings required to make a small block. Just some cool manufacturing connected to this thread.

Somebody mentioned 36 Chrysler's but IMO they are 36 Chevrolet's. Anyway the title is correct, it is a cool video.

I used to work in a foundry and that whole process hasn't changed much in 100 years. If you have heard the term core shift this is where that happens not 20k miles later like most think. It shifts during the casting process.

Agree.

I believe the vehicle assembly process was re-vamped during the Great Depression. Since the manufacturing community had some down time they took the opportunity to create the process we use today (separate body manufacturing, assembling via body drop onto the completed chassis, etc).

I'm speculating at this point but that may be why this video was created: to highlight these "new" assembly processes.

I thought they were Plymouth cars until I noticed 6 lugs and OHV engines. Are those features found on 36 Chryslers?

Interesting holes machined in the front of the intake. They would have been pre-thermostat so maybe they were expected to be used for heater hose and water pump bypass? Hmmm... actually, I'm wondering if it was intended to be an exhaust passage for intake warming.

The music was daft, but I guess it's better than listening to stamping presses.

I would have preferred the stamping presses over that music.
