Axle swap, will it fit?

I have a 72 lwb chevy with leaf springs. I had a friend of mine give me a 12 bolt axle out of a 95 truck. It has 3:73 gears in it that he claims are brand new. I was wondering if that axle would bolt right under my truck? Also could I put the spring perches on the bottom to lower the rear end of my truck?

Measure it! With a welder and cutting rig, and the right brackets, you could install just about anything- that fits!

And you can narrow the housing with those same tools!

Also do a double check on that. Never seen a stock 12 bolt in something that late model.

Re: Axle swap, will it fit?

Thanks guys. I am hoping that it will just bolt right up. I am also hoping that I can just swap out the axle shafts because the 95 axles are 6 bolt.

Re: Axle swap, will it fit?

Well, last night I had time to look at the axle that was given to me. It is not a 12 bolt, it is a 10 bolt axle. He is still stating that it has brand new 3:73 gears in it. I have a question though, what should have came out stock in our trucks to begin with. I'm not sure I will be ahead any by installing this axle in my truck, except maybe the gears. Hopefully somebody can enlighten me.

Re: Axle swap, will it fit?

I am guessing that the 72 came with fuel saving 3:08 gears. If you have the cover off the 95 rear, get the numbers off the ring gear for the ratio.

Re: Axle swap, will it fit?

The 95 rear with 6 lugs would be a 8.5 inch rear that should have come from a 4x4 truck and quite a few of those had the Z71 option and that added the posi to the rear end. Depending upon what the motor was that your truck came with from the General that would make a difference on the rear gearing. Jim

Thank you Jim, that is what I am trying to figure out. Is the 95 axle stronger than what came in the 72. When I get time off from the rent house I am going to look into this more.
